Blended and Divorced Families and Major Events—Part Two

I promised when I was writing Part One of this series on getting through major family events when you are part of a blended, divorced, and rearranged modern family that I would write this article providing tips for HOW to actually cope and survive. I do think there are some skills and coping mechanisms that can make it less stressful. Try to remember that you STILL cannot control what other people do or how they react. I know this can be a hard one and I am one of those single parents whose first inclination is try to organize the … Continue reading

Release and Detach

I know that most of you know that my life is full of teenagers and the grand lesson for parents of teenagers (and those teens) is learning how to let go, detach in some ways, and reconnect in others. As I look back, however, I can see how this has really been the process of parenting and family life all along and has taught me fabulous lessons that I can carry over into all areas of my life. What I have learned about letting go and detaching is that it is not the cold-hearted, ignoring behavior that I used to … Continue reading

Battling Pet Hair

My cousin’s home has hardwood floors, but part of the sealer coat is uneven in an area near the front hall. The semi-sharp edge is where you can typically find a wad of dog hair just about every day. Once he finds the time to reapply sealer in the affected area, I’m sure the dog’s hair won’t get caught there, but until then guests are forced to walk around or (GASP!) on a furball as they make their way to the living room. Being the Dyson lover that I am, I recommended that my cousin purchase a Dyson Pet Vacuum … Continue reading

Writing About What You Do

Promoting a business often means telling the story about what you do and what your business is all about. Many business owners feel comfortable doing just about anything EXCEPT writing. Whether you fear your spelling skills or seize up when you see a blank screen or piece of paper, it might be that writing about what you do is the hardest thing you have to face as a business owner. Since this can be such a great way of promoting your business, however, it might be worth your while to learn how to write about what you do. Writing articles … Continue reading

There Are Days When I Wonder If I Could Get Any Crabbier…

Why is it that there are days when I feel incredibly swaths of peace and great gifts of flexibility—and then there are others when I am really unfit for public consumption? Even after all these years and all the lessons parenting and family life have offered me, I still have days when I am not exactly sure what I am doing here! It is a strange thing to feel basically content, and still get downright crabby and not even fully understand why. It isn’t like the realities of my daily life change all that much from day to day or … Continue reading

There is Nothing Like a Child to Remind You That You Don’t Know it All

I am not a dumb woman…at least I didn’t think so prior to becoming a parent. In fact, I was quite certain I had all sorts of knowledge and what I didn’t know, I figured I could find a way to learn it when I needed it. Being a parent, however, has been the one thing in my life that has humbly reminded me that there is so much in this world that I really DON’T know! It isn’t that my children tell me I’m stupid (at least they didn’t until they became teenagers and they don’t try to get … Continue reading

Are You Secure Enough to Change Your Mind?

I am not the same parent I was nearly twenty years ago when I started out on this path. As a matter of fact, I am not the same parent or the same person I was even two or three years ago. Despite all my dedication and determination to “get things right” as a parent, I’ve changed my mind about all sorts of things. Rather than remain rigid or cling to things that really were not working with my particular individual offspring, I chose to change, evolve, experiment. Rather than feel weak or as if I have been defeated, however, … Continue reading

Accepting Alternative Paths

I know this title seems sort of “woo woo” as we like to say here on the West coast, but earlier today I was talking with a fellow parent and we were talking about the different ways our kids have of going about things. Not everyone follows the “traditional” or “socially acceptable” way of going about schooling, activities, religion, etc. As a matter of fact, our kids have a way of evolving individually and forcing us to realize that there are even different paths out there! When I was growing up, I just assumed that every kid went to their … Continue reading

High Tech Stress

Have you ever been in a position where you have not been able to check your email when you wanted to? How did it make you feel? Did you break out in a cold sweat? What about the last time you couldn’t use your cellphone? Did your head start to ache? Did your body start to tremble? If you answered “yes,” you may have a dependency issue with your electronic devices. In a previous blog I listed some of the physical symptoms people who have dependency issues with high-tech gadgets suffer from, but that’s just one area of your health … Continue reading

PlayStation 3 Soon Available

Good news for those of you who are still trying to get your hands on a Sony Play Station 3. A top executive for Sony Computer Entertainment America announced on Tuesday that Sony is on track to ship two million PS3 gaming consoles to North American stores by the end of March, expecting to completely ease retail shortages by May. The PS3, which costs between $500 and $600 depending on your choice of features, has been a red hot commodity since it’s release on November 17, 2006. Gamers stood in line across the country, some waiting for days, just to … Continue reading
