The HS Visit

High school was a long time ago for me. It’s hard to forget the memories though. Rows of locker doors, that great physics teacher, that great government teacher, the difficult geography teacher (who, in hindsight, did more to prepare me for college than maybe anyone), the daily routines, the cliques, how important friends were, how important “who” your friends were seemed to be, and on and on. High school is meant to be memorable. It was such a big place back then. Driving a car was an awesome perk. My first experiences with administrators who acted more like children than … Continue reading

Validation

Validation is a good thing. Sometimes all you need to hear to succeed is that you’re on the right path or that you’ve done something astounding or amazing or promising. Sometimes that is all you need to really get yourself motivated to do something even better. Sometimes that’s all you need to take the next step from being interested in a subject to devoting yourself to it. The person that pushes you to that next step is most likely a great teacher but it could also be a peer, friend, neighbor, parent, relative, or stranger. I can remember each of … Continue reading

Teacher Appreciation Week: Hats off to Ms. Diaz

I am going to cheat a little or maybe it isn’t cheating, but I asked Karri if she’d mind whether I posted my teacher appreciation letters here in Education this week and she was gracious enough to allow me the latitude. Today is May 8, 2007 and the theme for today at my daughter’s school for Teacher Appreciation is Letter Day from Parent. From the first … Continue reading

In addition to National Teacher Appreciation Week, there is also a National Teacher Appreciation Day. This year that day is Tuesday, May 8th. Below I have listed some ideas to help you and your children show gratitude toward their teachers. It is close to end of the school year and many parents attend and make pictures of almost all school events. Help your child create a scrapbook for his teacher displaying pictures of all of … Continue reading

B.E.A.R. Books

Organization is a huge component of teaching, especially in the lower grade classrooms. Children need a specific place for everything to go. It is also beneficial for teachers to have a special location for all paperwork. To aid in organization, my school’s primary grades use B.E.A.R. books. B.E.A.R. (Bring Everything, Always Ready) books are used in many schools. Some classes in my school do not use the acronym B.E.A.R. but have created their own. In the past, we made kindergarten B.E.A.R. books by using three ring binders and adding pocket folders in the middle. This year, we were lucky. We … Continue reading
