Silverlicious--Oh So Delicious!

Just when you thought Victoria Kann couldn't possibly weave another sticky sweet tale about her favorite sugar-coated character, the award-winning children's book author figures out a way to stuff more cotton candy fluff into a new tantalizing tome.

Kann already has my admiration for getting my truck-tough daughter to embrace her inner princess, but after reading her latest Pinkalicious creation, I bow down to the author even more. In Silverlicious, young readers get a taste of all the major holidays and the goodies that come with them.

The adventure starts when Pinkalicious taunts her brother, and then suffers a major tragedy in the process--she loses her beloved sweet tooth. Suddenly candy, cookies, cakes and chocolate no longer taste sweet.

In an effort to solve her life-altering dilemma, Pinkalicious pens a note to the Tooth Fairy, tucks it under her pillow, and slips off to Dreamland. When she awakes Princess Pinkalicious discovers that the Tooth Fairy is as overworked as her missing sweet tooth and can't replace her pearly white in a timely manner. Rather, Tootheetina sends in the B team including Cupid, the Easter Bunny, and a Christmas elf who magically transform Pinkalicious' room into eye-popping holiday wonderlands.

While the book's illustrations may send some toddlers into sensory overload, they are perfect for grade schoolers. My daughter's first grade class was mesmerized by the drawings, from the explosion of red and pink following Carlos Cupid's visit to the detailed decor featured in the Christmas-themed spread. The pictures alone make the book worth buying.

Kann's amazingly rich designs give Silverlicious a Where's Waldo feel. Kids can spend 10 to 15 minutes pouring over a single page searching for a litany of fine touches, from a trail of peppermints leading up to a tiny gingerbread house to carefully placed arrows that pepper the page attacked by a bow-toting Cupid.

Pinkalicious' plight covers 40 vibrantly colored pages. While I won't give away the ending, let's just say it includes a sweet lesson in the virtue of humility.

Silverlicious can be found at HarperCollins.com as well as major book stores across the country.
