Special Offers at Aulani, Disney’s Hawaii Resort

As winter approaches (or does more than approach, slamming some parts of the country with storms), we already want to turn our thoughts toward spring.  While there’s nothing we can do to make the months go by faster, perhaps what we can do is avoid the cold weather for a while by vacationing somewhere warm.  A dream vacation for many is Hawaii, and for Disney fans, that can mean one thing: Aulani. Disney’s Aulani Resort, located on Oahu, has recently joined the list of Disney destinations that get their own special offers page.  The resort is so popular that even … Continue reading

It Is Great To Work From Home In The Winter!

With winter on its way, I am once again very thankful to be a home-based professional. As much as I have been careful to avoid the subject of winter because I did not want to acknowledge that it was in fact on the way, I can no longer do so. A few inches of wet, heavy snow has already fallen here in New Hampshire, where I have been for the past few days. That wet, heavy snow (or a car accident related thereto) has caused a power outage at the hotel where we are staying – and a whole lot … Continue reading

Six Winter Skin Savers

Many people have a harder time with their skin during the winter months than any other time of the year! Here are some tips to help keep your largest organ happy during cold weather. Number one: keep up with your moisturizer… especially in the places where you tend to have problems. For me, I find my winter problem spots are the forehead, the knees and elbows, and the feet. And I’m good about applying lotion to my face after I shower… I’m not always so good about the other spots. And they show it! Number two: keep wearing your sunscreen. … Continue reading

Safety Tips for Portable Heaters

When the temperature goes down, more and more people are turning to portable heaters to warm up. Portable heaters can be a great way to cut your heating costs. Because they heat only a small space, you can turn down that furnace and yet still feel comfortable. Portable heaters are especially good when you will be staying in one place for a length of time, such as in an office, a home office, a living room, etc. Portable heaters do come with some safety precautions. As a source of heat and electricity, portable heaters can be hazards. Here are some … Continue reading

Frugal Month in Review: September 2008

Now that September is come and gone and the kiddies are settled back into school and regular routines, it is time to welcome the fall. Still, there is plenty of good stuff that went on in September, including a bunch of ways to save money. September 1st Frugal Living Week in Review: August 25th Through August 31st Food and back to school are the two things on my mind this week. I e-mailed my son’s teacher ahead of time to ask about additional supplies that she might need for the classroom. She said that she usually asks parents for antibacterial … Continue reading

The Limp is Back

Back in November, I noticed that Moose was limping a bit on some of our walks. The limp comes and goes, but with the recent colder weather, the limp is here more often than not. In fact, during the several days of sub-freezing temperatures, Moose seemed worse than ever: He would yelp or whine at even the lightest touch near his hips or rump. He limped when he walked. He held his back feet very close together while he walked or stood. He was very restless at night, and seemed to have a hard time finding a comfortable position. He’s … Continue reading

Preparing for a Winter Photo Shoot

Each year I put together a photo calendar for my mom. I collect 12 pictures of my daughter and use one for each month. But, every year I run into the same problem—-I never have a snowy shot to feature in the month of January. I deduced it is simply because I rarely take my camera outdoors when it’s frigid outside (which is practically every day in January given that I live in Wisconsin). As a result, I barely have any pictures of my daughter frolicking in snowdrifts or making a snowman or a snow angel. This winter I plan … Continue reading

Cold Weather Fitness Tips

When the weather is bad, it’s hard to stay motivated. On a really cold, wet day, it’s hard to even want to leave the house to head for the gym or go for a walk. Don’t give up on your health during the colder months! These tips can help you stay warm when the weather turns brisk. Dress in layers for your workout. When you start your exercise, you’ll still be cold and will need the extra warmth. As you heat up, you can take off as many layers as you need to — and put them back on if … Continue reading

On the Weight Watchers Wagon…Again: A Bathing Suit in February

I know what you are thinking: a bathing suit in February, are you crazy? This is the time of year when we are “legally” allowed to be covered in layers of clothes or bundled under the blanket in front of the fire. You technically don’t have to show skin for quite some time. But it’s true, I did it. I wore a bathing suit, in public, in the middle of February. It was for my kids (the things we mothers do). A new indoor water park just opened up complete with slides and a lazy river. My perpetually skinny friend … Continue reading

Hypothermia

Winter has finally gotten serious in my part of Michigan. The first “pretty” snow is on the ground. You know the kind- it’s fluffy and soft and looks slightly shimmery, and it’s not too cold to go out and enjoy it. It won’t last; the bitter cold always follows the not-so-cold. A little cold or a lot cold, it’s all relative to me. I seem to be consistently cold. Some days there just doesn’t seem to be anything I can do to warm up. Let’s suppose for a minute that I got brave and decided to go out with the … Continue reading
