Talk About Timing

You can’t control when a child is born. Or can you? This week, thousands of pregnant women are doing whatever it takes to score a designer birthday for their son or daughter-to-be. The anxious moms want to give birth on 11/11/11, and many are clamoring for their doctors to perform C-sections on them this Friday in order for their newborn to hold claim to a date that rolls around once every 100 years. Many moms-to-be like the idea of being in control of when their child will enter the world. Hence, the increasing number of C-sections performed in the United … Continue reading

Timing is Everything

‘Become the change you want to see in the world.’ That quote from Gandhi is emblazoned cross the notice board of a high school around our way. It started me thinking that it sounds like good advice for marriage too. So if you want your spouse to be more thoughtful or understanding or sensitive to your needs, then maybe you need to demonstrate those qualities toward your spouse first. I’m talking to myself, as much as any of you reading here. If you want your spouse to listen to you, then you need to show them the courtesy of listening … Continue reading

Tips for Taking that Perfect Photo: Timing

One of my proudest moments as a mom is when I capture my son in a photograph in just the right way: it’s focused, he’s smiling, and everything about the picture is adorable. I can’t get them on Facebook fast enough for all my friends and family to oohh-and-aahh over. A few of my friends have asked me how I get such good pictures of my son. Part of it is technique and part of it is the fact that he is just plain cute. Obviously I am a little biased because I’m his mom! I’m going to share with … Continue reading

Persistence and God’s Timing

Thanks to The Writing Life newsletter I read about the persistence of Terry Fator, a ventriloquist who entered the America’s Got Talent contest. Despite negative comments and knock backs he persisted. He has since signed ‘a $100 million, five-year deal to headline at Vegas’ Mirage hotel.’ All because he persisted. It’s much the same in the Christian life. We need to persist. Sometimes as friends, wives, parents, neighbors, we can talk and talk about faith and about God but nothing happens. Our loved ones still remain firmly apathetic or antagonistic to the gospel message. A man in our church found … Continue reading

Maybe This Is Not the Right Time to Talk About It

Many of us assume that communication with our children is about what we say and how we say it and while this IS important, it is not all there is to good communication. In fact, it might not be what you are saying but WHEN you are trying to say it. There really is a right and wrong time to talk about things. Waiting for the right time might make it more likely that your child will hear what you have to say and good communication will occur. There is definitely something to be said for tact and timing in … Continue reading

Timing Can Be Important

I do not know if I subscribe to the saying that “timing is everything”–maybe when it comes to personal relationships, but I don’t know if it ALWAYS the case when it comes to business concerns. I do, however, think that timing can be very important in operating a home-based business. I am not really talking about time management here (although we do chat about that often enough here in the Home Business blog and it is a key part of doing well in a home-based business), but more the realities of a market at any given time, the economy, the … Continue reading

How Important is Timing?

Do you want to know God’s timing regarding events in your life? Following on from my last blog about John the Baptist, let’s look at the importance of timing in God’s plans, Jesus’ ministry, in the lives of those who followed Jesus and in our lives. Here are eight points from Mark 1:9-20. 1. Note the importance of timing, as verse 9 is connected back to John’s testimony about Jesus and the Holy Spirit in verse 8. The events meshed together so others could see God’s hand at work and His timing. Similarly I can look at my life and … Continue reading

U.S. Birthrate Increased Due to Older Moms

The overall birthrate in the United States has increased for the first time in seven years. In addition, the birthrate among teens has dropped. Where is the increase coming from? It turns out that the slight increase in births is due to older moms. The Verge reported some data from a report created by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Part of the report noted the birthrate in the United States for 2013 and 2014. In 2013, there were 62.5 births per 1,000 women. In 2014, that number slightly increased to 63 births per 1,000 women. The CDC … Continue reading

Parenting Advice Challenges

You may think you have the absolute best parenting advice EVER to share with every mom and dad on the planet, but the fact is if said mother or father didn’t ask for your tips, it’s highly unlikely he or she is going to follow them. Unsolicited advice is invaluable advice. If you want to share your tried and true parenting techniques with other moms and dads, wait until you are asked.  Parents are more apt to follow advice if they are seeking it rather than having it forced down their throats.  What’s more, it’s important to remember that a … Continue reading
