Drinking and Drugs in Summer

How have your teenagers been spending their summer? Well, it could be they are doing things you don’t know about. That’s because according to U.S. health officials, the months of June and July are the highest in which teens start drinking, along with smoking cigarettes and marijuana. A report was just released this week by the “U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration” that during each day over the summer, first-timers are lighting up and drinking in staggering amounts. About 4,500 will try marijuana. Another 5,000 will light up a cigarette and more than 11,000 will have their first … Continue reading

At the end of every week, the Insurance Blog Week in Review gives you a quick and easy way to “ketchup” on all of the articles that hit the blog in the past week. There can be anywhere between 12 and 14 different blogs that have appeared. What did you miss this week? Renters Insurance Doesn’t Cover Bug Infestation A family in Bakersfield, California, rented a home that was infested with bugs. The entire family is suffering from scabies, and ended up throwing away their contaminated property. Would renters insurance covered any of this? Unfortunately, it would not. The Insurance … Continue reading

More Teens Drink and Drive on New Year’s Eve Than Other Holidays

A recent study shows that teenagers are more likely to drink and drive on New Year’s Eve than on any other holiday. The study also showed that peers can influence their friends not to drink while under the influence. Even so, parents should talk to their teens about the dangers of driving drunk. A study was done by Liberty Mutual Insurance and SADD. The acronym “SADD” stands for “Students Against Destructive Decisions”. It is a peer-to-peer youth education, prevention, and activism organization that is committed to empowering young people to lead initiatives in their schools and communities. Liberty Mutual Insurance … Continue reading

4th of July Weekend Sees Increase in Underage Drinking

As a parent of teens, what I am thinking most about with the upcoming 4th of July is what we are going to grill, who is going to come over and if we will get good seats for the fireworks. My teens are probably thinking about the food (most especially the dessert) and how much fun they are going to have hanging out with their friends. Great times together with family and friends, creating additional experiences to be stored in the memory banks of my children. But this carefree innocence isn’t felt by all. I ran across an article where … Continue reading

Parents Who Allow Teens to Have Sex at Home

Maybe I shouldn’t be shocked but I am. Apparently there is a new trend emerging in some homes, where parents are allowing their teens to have sex at home. Elizabeth Hasselbeck, co-host of “The View” and part-time contributor to “Good Morning America” took part in a discussion with both parents and teens in separate settings to discuss teen sex at home. There are some parents who believe that if their teens are going to have sex; they would be safer doing it at home. One mother cited her reasons for allowing her 18-year-old son to have sex at home is … Continue reading

Is Addiction In Your Genes?

Addiction is a very serious condition that affects about ten percent of the population. It affects people of all ethnicities, and all socioeconomic backgrounds. The consequences of addiction are diverse; it affects both physical and mental health and economic, social, and emotional well being. Our understanding of the workings of addiction has grown tremendously in recent years, as more and more research on addiction has been done. Research has shown that genetic predisposition to addiction, along with poor coping skills, are the two factors that determine whether an individual will struggle with addiction. Studies that were conducted by observing twins, … Continue reading

The Problem with Teenagers and Smoking

I think we all know that smoking is bad. It really bothers me when I see teenagers lighting up a smoke. Little do they know how gripping that kind of habit can be on their life. They do it because others are doing it. They do it because they think they look cool. A recent report from “Science Daily” indicated that 80% of smokers became addicted before they are 18 years old. While that is disheartening, we also know that teens that never start up smoking are not very likely to begin smoking later on. While it’s great that there … Continue reading

Link Between Family’s Wealth and Teen Drinking

A recent study came out that discussed how teens from wealthier families had a higher tendency to drink alcohol than their peers who come from low income families. Although many like to think that having money would make you and your children healthier, this may not always be the case. At first, I found this study surprising, but upon reflection, I’m guessing it was the same way during my high school days. The big drinkers in my school were defiantly the “popular” kids, most of which were from the wealthier families in my hometown. They were the binge drinkers, getting … Continue reading

Spice: A Legal Drug Teens Are Using

I really appreciate the fact that Dr. Phil is keeping up on the latest teen trends. I rely heavily upon his programs that feature issues our teens are dealing with. Last week he talked about a new “legal” drug that teens are using. It was the first time I had heard of it. It is called “Spice” and parents need to be aware of it. It also goes by the name “K2.” What Spice does for teens is similar to the effects of marijuana; the only difference is that you can legally buy Spice. It is sold as incense and … Continue reading

Teens and Drinking

This is the last blog I will be writing on the Dateline special that allowed parents an opportunity to see how their children would act in situations when they thought no one was watching. The last segment of the show featured another fake casting call with actors and real teens whose parents were watching through hidden cameras. In this scenario one of the actors pretended to be drunk and in one particular setting he actually drank in front of the other teens. Then they were told that they had to drive to another location. The teen that had been drinking … Continue reading
