Teens and Halloween

by Andrea Hermitt | More from this Blogger

Another Halloween is coming and my kids are starting to get ideas. My son likes to stick close to home and give out candy. This usually involves trying to also scare people that come to the door.

My daughter is the adventurous sort. She is asking to go beyond her usual Halloween Boundaries to another subdivision because she heard that they give out money.

Parents of teens are often apprehensive about Halloween, and with good reason. When we were kids, we could go out on Halloween after dark, get a little candy, act a little silly, and go back home. At worse, we played a few simple harmless pranks.

There doesn't seem to be much 'good clean fun' out there these days. Pranks are more dangerous and in some cases deadly. Pranksters shoot pellet guns at people, and kids who play pranks can get shot. It seems that the only way to keep them safe on Halloween may be to lock them in their rooms.

Still, kids will be kids and Halloween is one of those things that they want to experience. Some things parents can do is to drop them off and pick them up at Halloween, or church Harvest parties, or throw a party of your own. Consider providing a ride and supervision for your teen and their group, so that you can drive them to the places they want to trick or treat and to have your car be a quick escape should they feel threatened in any way.

Personally, I plan to hang out with my son as he gives out candy and tries to terrorize neighborhood kids, and will let my husband escort my 13 year old daughter... if he can't talk her out of trick or treating by providing candy and a scary movie.
