Teaching Your Kids Proper Telephone Manners

I’m marking today’s date so in ten years (hopefully it will be that long) I can look back on September 12, 2008 and remember how blissfully uninterested my preschooler was in telephones. She knows what the device is used for and how and when to call 9-1-1, but beyond that she really has very little desire to use the phone (oh, how I wish I could freeze time) save for her occasional desire to answer it when it rings more than three times. In my last blog I spent time discussing tips parents can use to get young children acclimated … Continue reading

Telephone Tips for Parents and Children

In a previous blog I shared my adventures in parenting in regards to teaching my preschooler how to use the telephone. Learning how to use the phone properly is a skill that is best practiced at home. After all, home is the place where your child has the most interaction with the telephone (unless you are one of those parents who’s surgically attached to their cellphone). As I mentioned in my previous blog, one of my brother’s duties as a firefighter is to visit schools to teach students about safety issues. A couple of years ago he sent me a … Continue reading

Tips: Poison Control

Do you have the number for the National Poison Control Center posted by your telephone? According to the Home Safety Council, 75% of parents don’t and this is sad because approximately 1/3 of all unintentional injuries are poison-related. Here are some things you need to keep in mind, according to the National Poison Control Center. If you think someone has been poisoned call 1-800-222-1222 for your Poison Control Center. The toll-free number works from anyplace in the U.S. 24-hours-a-day, 7-days-a-week. ******Reactions to poisons vary, depending on the product. The child may vomit, appear to be drowsy or sluggish, there may … Continue reading

Online Troubles (part 3): Suggestions and Remedies

The last two articles discussed some of the lesser known potential dangers of the Internet. The last part of this three part series will discuss a few suggestions for preventing and overcoming these struggles. Before we begin, however, I want to first give a brief disclaimer. These suggestions are not meant to be a comprehensive list of remedies for the issues discussed below. Nor are these suggestions meant for those with deep-rooted addictions and troubles. If you are struggling with a long-term addiction with some of these topics, I urge you to seek professional help, where you can. Check out … Continue reading

Do Your Kids Need a Manners Makeover?

One of my preschooler’s favorite animated shorts on Playhouse Disney is called “Can You Teach My Alligator Manners?” In it a little boy is challenged with the task of teaching his pet alligator Al how to behave properly. Young viewers help Mikey to instill good manners in his scaly sidekick by answering questions, such as: What should Al do when playing on a slide at the park? A. Shove the other kids off, so he can have a turn B. Sit at the bottom of the slide to prevent anyone else from going down C. Take turns My daughter loves … Continue reading

So Your Child Wants to Stay Home Alone—Part 2

I remember the first time my parents allowed me to stay home alone… it wasn’t exactly a momentous occasion considering my grandparents lived within walking distance of our house. Of course, a lot has changed since the early 80s, and now I can’t see allowing my daughter to remain home unsupervised until at least her 30th birthday. Jokes aside, if you successfully answered all of the questions I posed in my previous blog and feel confident that your child is ready to fend for himself, then consider the following tips offered by childcare experts to make his first solo venture … Continue reading

Is Your Child Ready to Answer the Phone?

It’s a question I asked myself a few weeks ago when my 4-year-old begged to pick up the phone while I was in the shower. Here’s the answer I came up with: If your child still holds the phone upside down and can’t figure out why grandma sounds so far away OR He or she tries to shove a freshly colored picture of Elmo into the receiver so grandma can see how well he or she stayed within the lines, then your child’s phone skills need some work and you might want to hold off on using him or her … Continue reading

More Advice on How to Call a Teacher at Home

In a previous article, I discussed the incident where a student called the school director’s home and his wife returned the call. I then discussed how frustrating it can be to have work related calls at home. While most teachers and public officials should expect to receive a few calls at home (especially if their number is listed in the telephone book), too many calls can be overwhelming and stressful. My article also began giving parents some tips on how to more positively call teachers or school faculty members. My first tip was to check and make sure that the … Continue reading

Is Marriage ‘the’ Key to a Better Society?

If you were to take the complexity of the problems in our world today, it would take days and days to tackle the breakdown of poverty, the ‘growing’ underclass and the lack of cohesiveness in our society today. I’ve even seen papers written about the fact that the breakdown of our person-to-person relations is in direct proportion to our growing technologies. It began, in essence, with the industrial revolution as we abandoned small town ties and the bonds created by sharing traditions and needs with rural communities. The transition from rural to urban diminished those ties and the transition from … Continue reading
