Studying Airfare Structures

Saving money on air travel doesn’t come without a little effort.  Or, in some cases, a lot of effort.  The advent of the Internet has made booking more convenient, but not all sites are easy to navigate; consequently, finding the best fare can be quite challenging.  Add to that the vast array of fare structures that vary from airline to airline and you may be tempted to drive to your vacation destination rather than fly. To help travelers find prices that best suit their budgets, American Airlines recently unveiled a new fare structure.  It offers potential fliers three coach-class fare … Continue reading

The Benefits of Structure

Have you ever heard of John Watson? He was a leading psychologist in the 1920s, who used to dole out child rearing advice, such as: “Never kiss and hug (children); never let them sit on your lap,” lest you spoil them. Basically, Watson believed that children should be treated as pint-sized adults, and parents, who provided too much love and affection, were doing their kids a grave disservice. Fast-forward to 2012 and Watson wouldn’t last a second on the talk show circuit hawking his child rearing advice books. Rather, he’d likely be skewered online by the Momosphere and smothered by … Continue reading

Understanding Legal Business Structure–Part Three–Limited Liability Company

A week or so ago, I started the series on understanding legal business structures for small, home-based businesses. We’ve talked about sole proprietorships and partnerships, but another business structure that some business owners consider is called a “Limited Liability Company” or LLC… This is a fairly new type of business structure that is becoming increasingly popular. One of the reasons for this popularity is that it can function sort of like a partnership, but it allows for limited liability in terms of debts and other “company” responsibilities. An LLC or L.L.C. is formed by state statute or law. The individuals … Continue reading

Understanding Legal Business Structure—Part Two—a Partnership

I wrote earlier today about how to understand what a sole proprietorship is and evaluate whether or not this is the legal structure for your home business. Since we are focusing on legal business structures, it seemed the next logical type to discuss is the “partnership.” While sole proprietorships are the easiest form of business to start and more common for small, home businesses—partnerships are a possibility too. The basic requirement for a partnership is that you have a partner! This means another individual with whom you go into business with. You do not have to be equal partners or … Continue reading

Stick To Your Guns

As single mother’s we are always given advice, a list of things to do to make sure our children grow up to be well adjusted adults. While this is helpful, most of the time, you have to take what works for you and discard the rest, a list of what not to do is just as important. One of the big things I learned quickly is not to give in. In the beginning it was so easy to give in to Hailey, I felt guilty and was trying to make things easier on her. After a while I had to … Continue reading

Obama’s Proposed Budget Will Affect TRICARE

President Obama has created a budget that involves cuts to military health care spending. It appears that the plan includes an annual increase to the cost of premiums for TRICARE which could get as high as 345% of the current cost. It has been said that this increase dishonors veterans. TRICARE is a government run health insurance plan that is available for members of the United States Department of Defense Military Health Care System. This insurance provides health insurance benefits for current military personnel, for their dependents, and for military retirees, (who are also called Veterans). TRICARE is the civilian … Continue reading

Do Not Believe The Stereotypes

Even as common as single parenting is, there are still so many stereotypes and common myths. Our children are from “broken” homes. This may be true for my marriage, it was broken, but I fixed my home and my family by getting a divorce. My family is not broken, I am not broken, my child is not broken. The same goes for “intact” family. Merriam- Webster defines family as “a group of persons of common ancestry”. We are an intact family, we are a group of individuals of common ancestry who just so happen to love each other and want … Continue reading

How Kodak’s Bankruptcy Could Affect Employee Health Plans

Eastman Kodak has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. When that happens to a company, it tends to generate a lot of anxiety for employees, both current and retired. What will happen to their health benefits? I cannot be certain exactly how that will work out, but, there are some general things that tend to happen in these type of situations. Kodak is one of the most recognized names of film, cameras, and photography equipment. George Eastman started the company in 1888. The company started with the slogan “You press the button – we do the rest!”. Since then, the company … Continue reading
