Potty Training Our Son Part V

I was determined that our son be potty trained sooner rather than later. During the course of our potty training efforts he had in fact used the potty to pee every so often and we even got him to poop on the toilet once, but our efforts were met with inconsistency. I knew that our son was perfectly aware of when he had to go to the bathroom. He did have some interest in using the toilet on and off for the past six months. During that time I offered him a reward, a piece of organic chocolate (I tried … Continue reading

Developmental Pediatrician

Our toddler has delays in speech and cognition. She is also delayed with potty training and sleeping. I tried to get Jessie into speech therapy through ECI early, but ECI would not provide it until she was two. Even then, the services they gave were woefully inadequate. When Jessie went for her three-year well-child visit, the pediatrician suggested that I take her to a developmental pediatrician for help with her delays. Jessie’s doctor gave me a list of developmental pediatricians in the area and I went to work on getting an appointment. My first choice was no longer practicing so … Continue reading

Have a Merry Meaty Christmas

Meat is big at our home around the holidays. Whereas I am a huge proponent of twice weekly meatless meals, when Christmas and New Year’s roll around I give into temptation and pull out my favorite red meat recipes. The following dishes are perfect for large groups. If you are planning to host a holiday party, you might consider adding these recipes to your menu. Not only are they simple to make, but they also hearty enough to satisfy the meat lovers at your table. SPICY SLOW COOKER POT ROAST Ingredients: 3 to 5 pounds boneless beef chuck roast 2 … Continue reading

Jackson Browne Sues John McCain

It often seems that musicians and politicians have a love/hate relationship. I already blogged about campaign songs certain politicians have chosen which might have not been the best choices had they thought the song all the way through. John McCain seems to be making bad campaign song choices left and right this year. Not just in lyrics, but just in general. He used John Melloncamp’s song “Pink Houses” earlier this year. On the surface, the song sounds okay, but if you dig deeper, it talks about dreams that are never fulfilled. In addition, Melloncamp himself contacted the McCain camp and … Continue reading

Do You Still Walk Your Child to the Classroom?

We have now been in school over half of the school year and each morning I still see parents standing by the doorways and lingering in the hallways. Do I think parents should not be in our school? By no means. I love parent involvement! But these parents are not involved. They are walking their child to the classroom and standing and watching and waiting for their child to break down and cry to go back home. They need to feel needed by their child. Our school, like many others has a nonofficial “drop-off at the door” policy. I say … Continue reading

Oh No They Didn’t!

“South Park” creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have always played with fire. It is often as if they do not even know the meaning of the phrase “bad taste.” Of course, for perhaps this very reason, they have garnered a loyal following. In the past, “South Park” has taken shots at George Clooney for mocking his Oscar acceptance speech for its political overtones and the Catholic Church when they showed an episode of the Virgin Mary was bleeding. One of their biggest controversies to date was with Scientology and some of its celebrity followers. Tom Cruise, John Travolta, and … Continue reading
