One “Brave” Family Adventure

Merida, the protagonist from “Brave,” fulfills the promise of all the Disney films that came before her. “Brave” isn’t Pixar’s best film, and isn’t even as exciting as some of Disney’s other princess films, but the character of Merida and her relationship with her mother make up for all of that. Pixar has done it again, Brave is a beautifully animated fairytale set in Scotland. The princess in this story, Merida, is a fiery red head with a mind of her own. No damsel in distress waiting for Prince Charming, Merida is determined to choose her destiny instead of allowing tradition to chose it for her. Merida wants to ride her horse and shoot arrows. When I wrote “Trick-or-Treating Minus the Parents,” I figured I would hear back from moms and dads whose children trick-or-treat in New York high-rises (with bellman) and don’t worry about kidnappers or other weirdo preying on their costumed kiddos running solo from floor-to-floor.
