My Dog Is Ruining My Carpet

My little dog is having potty issues. She is basically driving me out of my mind. I’ve tried everything, I kennel her any time I’m not home and at night while I’m sleeping. Somehow she still finds time to pee on the floor. I’ve been spending a lot of time lately spot cleaning the carpet and steam cleaning it and I’m learning more and more. The most important thing is to try to clean up accidents as soon as they occur. This isn’t always possible but once the urine soaks through to the pad it’s really hard to get rid … Continue reading

Not a Fan of Pet Movies, Pt. 1

A short while ago I mentioned animal adventure movies, a type I find best exemplified by the likes of “Homeward Bound,” “Milo and Otis,” or “Babe.” Not many movies belong to this subgenre of pet films, but that shouldn’t matter because as a pet lover I ought to revel in all animal films, right? Wrong. Pet adventure movies are just about the only animal films I can take. I find most other pet films soppy or overly sentimental. I don’t mean to insult those who love them, I just can’t watch them. I think it’s because many other pet movies … Continue reading

The Marriage Blog Week in Review for March 31 – April 6

After abandoning poor Lyn for a couple of weeks while I dealt with family issues I’m finally ready to resume my share of Week in Review duties. Here’s a recap of what we dished about last week here in Marriage. Monday, March 31, 2008 Lyn shared some interesting thoughts on Hollywood couples and the fates of their relationships. (Or demise as is the case more commonly and which may be a better word.) Tuesday, April 1 It might have been April Fool’s Day but I was not joking when I wrote about the big changes in my little marriage. Lyn … Continue reading

The Demise of a Pet

Do you have pets? Have you ever lost a pet? Young or old, we become very attached to our furry friends. For many families, a pet is another member of that family. The loss of a pet can therefore be very painful. It may be especially difficult for young children whom have not yet experienced loss. It’s good to talk about the demise of a pet with your child. You can find children’s books on the death of a pet that may be helpful, but if your child is extremely distraught, you may want to ask your pediatrician for a … Continue reading

More Carpet Stains: Their Final Demise

The standard carpet withstands a myriad of intrusions and punishments during its shaggy or smooth lifetime and even the best of them occasionally meet a stain that simply won’t go away. Here are some final thoughts on some really difficult ones. Read on, if you are up to the challenge! Rust Marks Make a paste using water and baking soda. Apply it to the rust marks and let it sit for three or four hours. Apply shampoo and rinse. Soot Scoop up excess soot, then sprinkle talcum powder liberally over the area. Leave on for a few minutes and vacuum … Continue reading

Teen Killers

My heart just breaks for the family of Jessica Ridgeway, the 10-year-old girl who disappeared earlier this month when walking to school in Colorado. Tragically, her body was found a few days later in a park. The killer? A 17-year-old boy who is also charged with the attempted kidnapping of a 22-year-old woman this past May. One of the things always looked at in cases like this is the personality of the perpetrator. This teen was described as quiet, shy, wore black clothing and pretty much kept to himself. Another story heavy on my heart is the death of Autumn … Continue reading

Halloween: A Parent’s Worst Nightmare

If you watched ABC’s Good Morning America earlier today, then you probably wish that Halloween would be cancelled all together, especially if you are a parent. The morning show did a bang up job trying to scare the daylights out of moms and dads with a segment about the many, many, many, many ways kids could die on October 31st. Actually, I think piece was designed to increase safety and parental awareness regarding the dangers that lurk on All Hallows’ Eve, but all I walked away with was a dozen or so ways my kid could meet her maker on … Continue reading

Ding, Dong the King is Dead–Maybe

Boo to the hoo! Look who’s crying about the demise of the creepiest looking member of fast food royalty. Not me! Ding, dong the king of burgers is dead. Burger King has left the building. No, really, he’s gone. Parents of the world, let us celebrate this monumental occasion. No more kiddos jumping into our beds at night after having nightmares starring the disturbing-looking freakazoid spinning around in white tights, a fur-trimmed crushed velvet jacket and a crown, while hawking burgers and fries. The crazed-looking, plastic mask-wearing bearded monarch, who flashed his bizarre grin on bags that housed Whoppers and … Continue reading

Will You Lose Your Health Insurance in 2014?

We have all been hearing about how in 2014, the health insurance exchanges will open. The expectation is that this will change everything about how health insurance is bought and sold. Many people are concerned that they will automatically lose their employer sponsored health insurance in 2014. Will that really happen? A study was done by the Urban Institute finds that the idea that employer sponsored health insurance is going to reach its “demise” in 2014 is an incorrect assumption. They used a “health insurance policy simulation model” and found that employer sponsored health insurance isn’t likely to be much … Continue reading

The Best Animals on the Internet

I thought I would use today’s blog to have some lighthearted fun to send us into the long weekend. I’m highlighting my favorite animal videos and stories that I’ve found around the web. They’re not long enough to warrant entire posts like the times I’ve talked about dog and capybara best friends or countries-crossing cats, but altogether they’ll make for an amusing way to start off the weekend early. The first video I want to share—my absolute favorite animal video online—features two adorable otters. They might be good friends or maybe they’re sweethearts, but they spend the majority of the … Continue reading
