Sesame Street Lends a Hand to Cash-Strapped Parents

My preschooler loves watching Sesame Street, but honestly, the summer reruns are killing me. Seriously, if I have to hear Telly Monster lament about his missing triangle one more time I may reconsider Dish Network’s recent offer to hook me up with cheap satellite TV. Fortunately, I may not have to dig deep to preserve my sanity. Yesterday, the folks who produce Sesame Street announced that new episodes of the Emmy Award-winning children’s show will begin airing next month. What’s more, the new season includes a special show dedicated to the economy. If you haven’t already discussed the current financial … Continue reading

Family Fun for Less

Not everyone is pinching pennies during these tough economic times, and for those lucky families, taking advantage of incredible travel deals is a no-brainer. A number of luxury resorts are slashing prices to entice families to visit their kid-friendly properties, which means if you have the means to scoop up these savings you are guaranteed a good time. For example, the Somerset on Grace Bay, located along a sugar sand beach in Turks & Caicos, is offering incredible deals on their collection of spacious, ocean-front suites, villas, and cottages with full gourmet kitchens, surround-sound plasma TVs, and marble-floored bathrooms with … Continue reading

More Reasons to Visit Rhode Island and New York

RHODE ISLAND If you are looking for a way to light up your life then look no further than Providence, Rhode Island. This summer Providence’s WaterFire will once again set the city’s rivers aglow with massive bonfires. Event organizers say this year there will be 11 full bonfire lightings (with the possibility that two more will be added) and four partial lightings for the free arts event. That’s the good news. The bad news is that due to sponsorship cutbacks the live jazz concerts that are a huge part of WaterFire will only be offered three nights during the popular … Continue reading

Alice in Wonderland (1999)

This version of the Lewis Carroll children’s classic was filmed for television and includes the characters found in both “Alice in Wonderland” and “Through the Looking Glass,” the sequel. As a Carroll fan (I’ve even read “The Hunting of the Snark”) I was curiouser and curiouser to watch this film, but I’m sorry to say, I was disappointed. It all began with Tina Majorino, the young lady chosen to play Alice. While I generally consider her to be a great actress, I didn’t feel that she gave us the performance we needed. She was fourteen when she made this film … Continue reading

The Good and Bad of “It Runs In The Family”

Heredity is a funny thing–and I am not just talking about genetic inheritance either–but all those quirks, personality traits, tendencies, and values that tend to run in families. It does not even have to be a biological relation. Each family has its own “culture”–just like a work environment, church, or community–and it can be interesting to look over both the good and the bad of what sort of things run in the family… One of my daughters said once that “divorce runs in my family”–with grandparents and great-grandparents and her own parents, she was right in noticing that she doesn’t … Continue reading

Good News For East Coast Commuters

Each weekday my uncle and cousin take the train in from New Jersey to get to their jobs in New York City. This week marked a new era for them and thousands of other train commuters with the introduction of New Jersey Transit’s first multilevel train car. It currently runs from Trenton to New York and yesterday, according to my family members, it was filled with (gasp!) happy commuters. The introduction of the new train car is the first step in a two-year effort that will result in putting 234 of the double-decker cars to use. The cars offer more … Continue reading

Stress and Digestion

Stress affects most organs of the body and the stomach is no exception. Stress can cause those familiar knots in the stomach, some types of ulcers, constipation, diarrhea, poor absorption of nutrients leading to further ill health, and oversecretion of stomach acids. If all this sounds like a pain in the gut, it is! Of course, not all these conditions are caused by stress alone, but a person who is subjected to chronic stressors in their life will almost always suffer some form of digestional difficulty. It may be a sore stomach, frequent burping, heartburn or gastric reflux, or bouts … Continue reading

Davy Jones Dies at 66

On Wednesday, February 29, 2012, Davy Jones passed away in Florida from a massive heart attack. Fans all over the world are mourning and wishing his family well. The 66-year-old singer, actor and celebrity will be missed especially by the generations who grew up with the Monkees, either when they first appeared ion television in 1966 or throughout the years in reruns. Jones is best known for his time with the Monkees and such hit songs as “Daydream Believer,” and “I’m a Believer.” Many fans remember his guest appearance on the hit 70’s television show, The Brady Bunch. Beside the … Continue reading

Ways to Save: Savvy Shopping

I’ve seen TLC’s megahit, “Extreme Couponing” on many occasions, and each time I view it I’m left asking this question: Where are these people shopping that they can double or triple their coupons? Clearly, not in Wisconsin. I don’t know of any grocery store in the state that doubles coupons. And if I am wrong, I would love for you to let me know. I could actually save money if I’m incorrect. What a concept. I am an avid coupon-er, though I don’t dumpster dive nor do I steal newspapers from other people’s homes. Rather, I simply use what I … Continue reading

The Many Marathons of runDisney

I just came in from my morning run with my dog, so it seems appropriate that now I’d sit down to write about the Disney Parks’ many marathons. I run for the sake of my health and my dog’s health, however, not so much for fun, so don’t expect to hear of me signing up for any of these any time soon. For 2012 runDisney has added another marathon to its schedule. The Los Angeles Examiner reports that on January 29, 2012 Disneyland will host the Tinker Bell Half Marathon. This is another event exclusively for women, joining the already-established … Continue reading
