The Sunny Side of Summer Scrapbooking

I share a summer birthday with my dad and grandfather, so there was no shortage of greeting cards around our home during the month of August. Given our collective ages, it’s no surprise that we still treasure receiving traditional birthday cards rather than the digital ones that are sent via email. I am a tactile person. I love wrapping my fingers around handwritten well wishes, and then cutting up said well wishes and placing them in a scrapbook. I’ve been doing it for years. Why waste a perfectly good greeting card when you can add it to a scrapbook layout? … Continue reading

The Sunny Side

If someone told me that I’d be dragging a water table outside for my swimsuit clad kid to play with on March 18th I would have likely thought he or she was still wasted from St. Patrick’s Day. After all, we live in the Frozen Tundra that is northern Wisconsin, where it snows in June. Experiencing 80-degree temps in March is beyond the luck of the Irish; it’s downright dreamy. And by dreamy I mean hello global warming, where have you been all my life? Our neighbor flew to Los Angeles early this morning only to find that the southern … Continue reading

Planning a Wedding – Things to Consider

Reading the forums recently it seems some people are planning weddings and looking for ideas. Here are some things to think about. These are not from our wedding – that was way too long ago. But from our daughter’s wedding and other recent weddings. 1. Guests The number of guests and how to accommodate them all is often an issue. What follows is a good solution. When our daughter was married they had a garden wedding. The garden did have a marquee available if it was needed, but it was a brilliantly sunny day. I’m sure a lot of prayer … Continue reading

Heiress Sunny von Bulow Dies

You might not remember the story of Sunny von Bulow. The reason may be that the heiress has lived in a comatose state for the past 28 years. Martha “Sunny” von Bulow started out life with a silver spoon in her mouth. She was the only child of utilities magnate George Crawford and Annie Laurie Warmack. When she was four years old, Sunny’s father died, leaving her millions of dollars. She briefly married His … Continue reading

Sunny Travel Funnies—-Cross Country Crack-Ups

It’s been a while since I wrote my last installment of the Sunday Travel Funnies, but this week it’s back… with some major crack-ups. We begin in Jacksonville, Florida where a driver there caused an accident that would no doubt have Bill Cosby shaking his head. According to police, a truck driver narrowly escaped serious injury (he did sustain injuries but has since been released from the hospital) this week when his truck smashed into another vehicle and flipped over on a local highway spilling thousands of Jell-O snack packs on I-95. Police say the truck driver lost control of … Continue reading

If the Weather outside is frightful…

It is that time of year again. The weather can do some crazy things, and that’s even more true if you live in an area that is prone to drastic weather changes. We actually have days here that may be sunny and a nice, warm 75 degrees but drop more than 40-50 degrees by late that night. That’s a big difference in a 24 hour period! Sometimes, it’s even more extreme. Have you ever had the air conditioning on during the day and the heat running at night? I try to avoid such uses of energy, but there have been … Continue reading

Sunny Boy! The Life and Times of a Tortoise – Candace Fleming

The tortoise has always preferred a very quiet sort of life, but all that changed one day when he was snatched off his rock, put in a box, and plunked on a ship, bound for New York. They had plans for him – he was going to become turtle soup! But as luck would have it, after arriving in New York, he bounced out of his box and landed on the lap of a diner. The man’s name was Pelonius Pimplewhite, and he decided to take the tortoise home with him. Pelonius was a horticulturist, and he had a wonderful … Continue reading

Bringing in the outside

My girl ran to the first dandelion to appear in our front yard this spring and promptly yanked it out. No, she was not weeding for me that was just a pleasant byproduct of her excitement for springtime. She carried that little yellow symbol of both April and a messy yard all the way to the market and back home again, even though the time spent in the hot car while we shopped made the weed a limp and sad shell of what it once was. When we arrived home, I ran around our side yard, which was covered in … Continue reading
