Should Both Parents Tend to the Baby at Night?

Whose job is it to get up in the middle of the night to tend to a crying infant? There was a time when the automatic assumption was that this task was entirely for the mother. Today, there are plenty of parents who realize that there are good reasons to share this responsibility. Babies are incredibly cute. They can also be exhausting. Many babies simply refuse to sleep through the night. They loudly let their parents know that they need a diaper change or want to be fed. At least one parent needs to get up to tend to the … Continue reading

Flaky Cats and What to Do About Them

My cat Chrestomanci is flaky. I don’t mean that he isn’t reliable or backs out on obligations (though I’m sure that too – he is a cat, after all), but that he has a dandruff problem. He’s had it ever since I’ve known him, even back when he was still just one of the cats kept by the rescue for which I volunteer. I’ve never been too concerned about Chresti’s dandruff, though I guess it’s a little gross. When I took him to the vet in February I asked about it, more out of curiosity than out of concern. At … Continue reading

Dogs and Guilt: A Case Study

I recently read a study, I don’t remember where now, that claimed to definitively prove that dogs don’t feel any guilt. Researchers left a variety of dogs alone in a room (one dog per room) with some treats. All the dogs were scolded when the humans came back, whether or not they actually got into the treats. Each dog reacted to the admonishment, no matter what it had done. In fact the innocent dogs, the ones that had left the treats alone, acted even more ashamed of the supposed crime than the guilty ones. The researchers concluded that dogs aren’t … Continue reading

Can’t Stop Staring At the Screen

One of the signs that a child might have ADHD is that the child has extreme difficulties with concentration. This doesn’t mean that he or she is never able to focus on anything, ever, though. Kids who have ADHD often find it easy to focus on information that is on a television or computer screen. It may sound contradictory, but there are some good reasons why this happens. Children who have ADHD often find it difficult to concentrate when they are in a school environment. This is one of the first signs of ADHD that a teacher will pick up … Continue reading

Recognizing Teenage Depression

Teenagers experience a wide variety of moods and emotions. Sometimes they will go through a period of feeling depressed. Teenage depression is normal; however, if it becomes a chronic issue then it may be something more serious. As a parent of teenagers I want to be able to recognize when things are not right. Most teenagers won’t come right out and say that they are depressed. Or they may not even associate what they are feeling as being depression. It is not always recognizable to the person experiencing it. Of course, we have to be balanced in gauging our teens … Continue reading

Quick Beauty Tips

Don’t you love waking up in the morning, taking one look in the mirror and wishing you could just go back to sleep? I have to admit that the older I get, the more I see things that weren’t there before and it can be a little discouraging. I am trying really hard to age with grace. However it can be a challenge sometimes to get past it and accept things as they are. At the same time I also know that there are ways we can combat the signs of aging or at the very least, make ourselves presentable … Continue reading

Caregiver Danger Signs

Whether you are looking for full time care for your baby or just an occasional babysitter, here are some signs you can look for that may tell you that your caregiver isn’t right for you and your child. Your baby is your most precious possession. I once heard the advice that you should never leave your baby anywhere you wouldn’t leave a million dollars. And of course, your baby is priceless and much more important. Here are some danger signs that warrant a closer look at your caregiver. She doesn’t follow standard safety advice If your caregiver puts your newborn … Continue reading

The Great Pajama Adventure

Necessity is, indeed, the mother of invention. I know this because I have four very inventive children and I, as their mother, have done a great many things out of necessity to keep them alive and me sane. Take, for instance, what I did last night. My three-year-old is the most darling little toddler boy you’ll ever meet. I can give you a money-back guarantee on that. He’s also the most mischievous, monkey-like little boy on the planet. (I think God makes the most rascally little boys also the cutest ones – it saves their lives.) Lately, he’s gotten in … Continue reading
