Picture Books that Adults Will Love, Too!

Reading is an important skill. Parents who want to raise an avid reader need to take the time to read lots of stories to their children. It is also a good idea to let your child see you reading. Children often imitate the behaviors they see their parent’s doing. Check out some of these children’s books that adults will love, too! Reading books with your child can be a rewarding experience. It is a nice way to spend time together and share a hobby that you both enjoy. Things can become a bit maddening, however, when a child insists upon … Continue reading

Back to School Books

If your child is starting school there are some great books that will help him to prepare for this big event in his life. You may have a child who is excited or you may have a child who is a little fearful. This may be your child’s first year of school or it could be their third year. For some children every year is difficult for them until they get the hang of the routine. After all, they have had the summer off with a completely different schedule. They have not had homework either. Bedtime did not come with … Continue reading

Little Critter Books

I have always stressed the importance of reading in my house. I would encourage it at every opportunity. Story time was a big deal. Every day we would take time out to do this. It was loved by all in my house. In the evening there was also story time. It was a daily ritual and because of that, I believe, I had good readers around me. Not only did my house have good readers, but imaginations ran wild here. It was a good thing. There were stories created by the people among me that I have saved and treasured … Continue reading

Great Books for Spring

We’ve been planting seeds around here, and although there is still sporadic slush falling from the sky, it definitely feels like spring is just around the corner. Here are a few of my favorite spring books to read with preschoolers. Debbie Ouellett’s How Robin Saved Spring is a lazy bedtime or afternoon book, since it is long. In this book, the seasons are sisters. The winter sister wants the spring sister to sleep forever, so that winter can last forever. Robins seem to be a popular theme for spring stories. My Spring Robin by Anne Rockwell is one of my … Continue reading

Top Bedtime Books for Babies

I love children’s books, and I’ve collected them since I took a children’s literature course way, way back in university (yes, I feel that old!). Some of these books I know from my childhood, others I discovered when I became a parent. Here are some of my favorites: Good Night Moon by Margaret Wise Brown Ah, I remember this book from my childhood, and I am sure that many of you remember it from yours. This slightly oddball story with quiet pictures gets darker and darker as the book goes on and we say good night to all of the … Continue reading

Baby Blog Month in Review: July 2008

Two of my three children are summer babies. That is, they were born in the summer and had their first months surrounded by sunshine streaming in the windows, the sound of birds chirping, and days spent wearing nothing but a diaper and a “onsie.” I made sure that they had Fourth of July outfits ready, even though one of them arrived a week after the holiday. I guess he just wasn’t interested in the parade. Do you have a summer baby, too? We had a lot of new information to share this past month, such as recall notices and new … Continue reading

The Picture Books of Laura Joffe Numeroff

Laura Joffe Numeroff is best known for her blockbuster children’s picture book, “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie.” Published in 1985 by Harper Collins, this book is a cautionary tale – if you give a mouse a cookie, he’s going to ask for milk, and then a straw, then a napkin, and it will just escalate from there until that little rodent’s got you hopping. With great illustrations by Felicia Bond, this book is one of the most popular children’s books to come out in the last thirty years. To build on that success, Numeroff wrote several other books … Continue reading

Mercer Mayer – the Man and His Books

One of my favorite books from childhood is called “Just for You.” It stars a shaggy little creature who has a tendency to goof up everything he touches, but that doesn’t keep him from trying. He tries to take a nap just for his mommy, but the bed is too bouncy and he ends up jumping on the bed instead of sleeping. He tries to mow the lawn just for his mommy, but he can’t reach the handle. On and on the story goes, and he gets more and more discouraged that all his attempts to give his mommy a … Continue reading

Children’s Picture Books about the Snow

It’s the season! Depending on where you live, you’re either shivering in the cold, rejoicing because you aren’t, or dreaming of a white Christmas. Almost nothing brings in a festive mood like seeing those flakes falling from the sky, and so I’ve chosen to review a couple of picture books about playing in the snow. First is “Cat and Mouse in the Snow” by Tomek Bogacki. (That’s a Polish name, in case you’re as curious as I was when I first saw it.) The cat and the mouse are good friends, and they are both very curious. They love to … Continue reading
