Underage Drinking Parties

Would you allow your teenage child to host a drinking party? One couple did and now they are facing charges. Over the summer they allowed their eighteen-year-old daughter to have a party with about thirty of her peers to celebrate graduation. The parents were home but claimed that they didn’t know the teens were drinking. My question to them, “How could you not know?” The police came to the party after a party guest crashed his car on his way home. Police found alcohol and marijuana in the teenager’s car and when they found out the source was the party … Continue reading

Why You May Pay Dearly For Being a “Cool” Parent

Prom season is in full swing and graduation festivities are not far behind.  If all the pomp and circumstance has prompted you to honor your kid’s wish to turn your home into party central, you might want to consider what it’ll cost you. Forget about the bill for the food, beverages and decorations; rather, focus on how you may pay dearly if you aren’t familiar with social host ordinances. A “social host” is anyone who knowingly allows underage drinking to take place on property that he or she owns, leases or otherwise controls.  This is not to be confused with … Continue reading

The Beer Can House

When I search for green things to blog about, I always like the creative and unusual. I found both of those in John Milkovisch and his Beer Can House. Milkovisch covered his Houston house in beer cans. There seemed to be an abundance of beer cans in the ‘70s. When I was little, maybe it was just a southern thing, but people around here made hats of beer cans. They would cut them up, punch holes in them and crochet them into a hat. Sounds attractive, doesn’t it? Hey, it was the ‘70s. Anyhow in 1968, Milkovisch found himself retired … Continue reading

Talking to Your Kids about Alcohol Abuse

When I was getting ready to go away to college, my parents sat me down and said something to the effect of “you’re probably going to drink when you’re at college, just do it responsibly.” They didn’t know that I’d already been faced with offers of alcohol and turned them down without hesitation. But then, I wouldn’t consider myself a typical teen with a typical curiosity about drinking. I had already seen up close what serious drinking could do to a person, and was not at all interested in alcohol. I never had more than a sip to taste until … Continue reading

What Are You Modeling?

This morning I heard an interview on the car radio about modeling. Not the catwalk, skinny almost to the point of anorexia, type modeling but the model parents set for children. The subject under discussion was the use or misuse of alcohol and how children pick up on what they see modeled in the home. At the moment the Australian government is running a series of ads about the effects on children of what they see modeled in the home. If Dad or Mom have always got a beer in their hands, the children tend to follow suit. In Australia … Continue reading

Has Your Ten Year Old Tasted Alcohol?

A study from the University of Pittsburgh found that two out of five American children between the ages of eight and ten — that’s forty percent — have tasted alcohol. That means just a few sips… nothing dangerous, right? What might be more worrisome is that of the children who had tasted alcohol, one third of parents had no idea that it had happened. Before the University of Pittsburgh study, research on alcohol use in children focused on older children and larger quantities of alcohol. Most of the prior research only asked about a child taking “more than a few … Continue reading

Family Sues Parents In Alcohol-related Death

Last August, 19-year-old Jaclyn Bien died in an alcohol-related motorcycle accident. Bien’s family is suing the bike’s driver and the parents who, they say, hosted an underage drinking party. The suit alleges that the parents who hosted the party knew that the attendees were all underage and should not have been drinking. Unfortunately, this has been happening more and more. I’m not sure what the rationale is for parents who allow their kids or others to drink in their home and then get on the road. I know a parent who allowed her underage son and his friends to drink … Continue reading

Baby Given Four Times the Legal Limit of Alcohol

We all know the dangers of adults drinking alcohol. Alcohol slows down mental functions and reaction time and in large amounts can case unconsciousness and even death. So why would parents give a two-month old baby alcohol? That is the question doctors and police in Colorado are asking themselves. The baby girl and her mother were dropped off at a hospital in Colorado by the mother’s boyfriend. Upon examination doctors found that the infant had a blood alcohol level of 0.364, four times the legal driving rate in Colorado. The mother gave mixed stories about what happened so investigators are … Continue reading

How To Have a Claim Free Holiday Season

I just love the holiday season, I love cooking, baking, making gifts, entertaining and everything about being stressed-out with the joy of giving my family and friends the best I have to share. It’s the time of the year I enjoy giving others something they wouldn’t ordinarily give to themselves. We always have a huge party and invite everyone, It’s my turn to show off and give them the taste of my cooking. We all (hopefully) invest in a Homeowner or Renters insurance policy for a reason. The fact is that every year the holidays bring multiple opportunities for families … Continue reading
