Snow Day Part I

The day was planned.  My husband and two of his colleagues were carpooling seventy minutes to one of their company’s retreat houses (a program to help those with substance abuse issues overcome their addictions) to work on training and curriculum development. After taking on a new position in the same company where he has worked for over a year, he spends less time out at the houses and more time working on bettering the program. I also had a busy day planned.  Breakfast at seven in the morning (obviously) so that we can eat with my husband before he goes … Continue reading

Preparing for a Powerful Snowstorm

All along the east coast, from Delaware through the New England state, families are bracing for a powerful snowstorm that may bring many inches of snow. Already snow has landed in Georgia, an unusual occurrence. Cities and states are declaring states of emergencies, even before the first snowflake has fallen. Here in my little part of Pennsylvania, we are expecting somewhere around 12 to 14 inches of the white stuff. While we don’t usually freak out about snow, the reality is that once you get a prediction past six inches here, it is time to make the preparations to ensure … Continue reading

Snow Day Photography

Today is one of those rare days in West Tennessee, we have snow! Schools are closed and I am fortunate enough to be able work from home when weather gets a bit yucky. A day like today is just begging me for some snowy day photography. Snowy day photography can be a little tricky. Do you ever take pictures of your kids playing in the snow and the photos are dark or have a weird colored tint to the snow? When taking photos outside with the combination of bright sun and snow your camera can be a bit overwhelmed. Cameras … Continue reading

Insurance Blog Week In Review January 9-15, 2007

It’s been a busy week for so many people in the United States. The weather has been a huge problem with snow, ice and unusually cold temperatures. Get ready to pay a lot more for Oranges and Avocado’s after the deep freeze in Southern California. Many homeowners have suffered the Midnight Disaster, including my little brother. Caught completely off guard with freezing temperatures and a ruptured pipe in the attic. Thankfully, he was able to Ask Anna (or sissy) for help in this matter! When my brother woke up to find boxes falling out of his attic and water flooding … Continue reading

Staying Safe on the Way to School

All summer long my 7-year-old has been begging me to let her ride her bike to school once September rolls around. Never mind that she would have to pedal 10 miles round-trip in order to make her dream come true. Oh, and we live in Northern Wisconsin where the snow is measured in feet not inches and it’s not unusual for the wind chill to dip into the -50s during the winter months. Details, schmetails. The problem is that she sees a ton of kids from our neighborhood bike down a short .04-mile hill to the public elementary school during … Continue reading

The Best Animals on the Internet

I thought I would use today’s blog to have some lighthearted fun to send us into the long weekend. I’m highlighting my favorite animal videos and stories that I’ve found around the web. They’re not long enough to warrant entire posts like the times I’ve talked about dog and capybara best friends or countries-crossing cats, but altogether they’ll make for an amusing way to start off the weekend early. The first video I want to share—my absolute favorite animal video online—features two adorable otters. They might be good friends or maybe they’re sweethearts, but they spend the majority of the … Continue reading

Unpopular Baby Names

Countless articles and books promote the most popular baby names in the world. Even if you aren’t pregnant or have a baby at home, you probably know that the names “Ava” and “Aiden” are much cooler than “Lizzeth” and “Zwin.” Still, it seems parents these days are constantly on the lookout for the next unusual name that will go mainstream. That’s where Pamela Redmond Satran’s book, “Beyond Ava and Aiden” comes in. The author recently scoured name statistics and found the 100 most unpopular baby names. Well, technically, Redmond Satran categorizes the baby names as “cool” and “uncommon,” but what … Continue reading

This Winter Will Be a Cold One!

If you have been putting off getting new more efficient windows, caulking your window and door frames or even moving to a warmer climate, this may be the year to do it. According to the Farmers’ Almanac , which goes on sale this week, most of the United States of America will see colder than average temperatures with more snowfall than usual. This news is especially harsh considering that the cost of home heating fuel has risen so much. We kept our thermostat pretty low last year and got by, but the cost of our oil has increased for this … Continue reading

Grab Your Kites!

Do you know where your kids’ kites are? April is National Kite Month and one of my family’s most favorite times of the year. (Now, if we could only get the snow to melt and the temperatures to rise above freezing we’d really be in business.) Spring is one of the best times to get out and let your kite carve through the crisp April air. And while you don’t have to travel any farther than your own backyard (if it is large enough) to set your kite soaring there are some places around the country that kite-flying experts consider … Continue reading
