I Hate My Teenage Daughter

No, I don’t hate my teenage daughter. But I’m sure the title of this blog captured your attention. This is actually the title of a new show coming to FOX, starting November 30th. I happened to see a preview of it this week. In the preview you see two mothers sitting together, talking about their teenage daughters. But all you hear is negativity. Granted, it’s supposed to be a comedy but I actually found the dialog a bit unnerving. Once again the world of sitcom is tackling an important relationship in such a way that it doesn’t promote any sort … Continue reading

Vacationing with a Teenage Daughter

Our family just got back from a very educational vacation in Washington D.C. We actually stayed at a hotel in Virginia but everyday took a Metro into D.C. I really thought this was going to be an experience that my children would appreciate. After all, who wouldn’t enjoy seeing the White House or the Capitol? Who wouldn’t want to see the original Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution? My 13-year-old daughter didn’t want to see those things. In her words the only thing that “rocked” was our hotel because it had a pool and access to computers so she … Continue reading

Dick Clark Dies at 82

The world’s oldest teenager died today. Consummate host/producer/television and radio personality Dick Clark passed away today at the age of 82 from what TMZ is reporting as a “massive heart attack.” My first thought was “He was only 82?” It seems as if he packed twice as many years of living into that time. Clark began working right out of high school as an office worker at a radio station in NY owned by his uncle and managed by his father. He quickly fell into replacing the vacationing weatherman and doing station breaks. He bounced around radio and television stations … Continue reading

Blame It On Being Single

It’s tough being a single parent as anyone with any experience will tell you, but do you find yourself using the fact that you are a single parent to avoid doing other things? I know I am guilty of that. Take exercise for example. When I first got divorced I didn’t want to leave Hailey home alone while I went to the gym, it was bad enough that she was home alone after school every day. So I didn’t exercise. When she got a little older I told myself that I needed to be home because teenagers need to know … Continue reading

Summer Air Travel With Kids

Ah, summer time travel. I love it, I hate it. Yes, I know that hate is a strong word. Don’t tell my daughter. While I love visiting new and familiar places and welcome seeing all of our relatives, I really don’t enjoy being in transit. On our trip this June, we went on a walk, a bus, a boat, a train, an airplane, a train, and a cab just to get to where we were going. That was only one way, too. Sigh. Being in transit is especially hard on kids, especially small children. They just don’t understand why you’re … Continue reading

Maintaining Fitness Routine On Vacation

Last week my family took a trip to Washington D.C. One of the things that concerned me was having my fitness routine disrupted. I know that vacations can really set you back. One of the important things that you need to remember when taking a vacation is that the same rules apply. If you eat healthy at home you should eat healthy on vacation. If you exercise at home you should exercise on vacation. It may take some creativity to do this but for the most part, I believe it is possible. I would love to say that I followed … Continue reading
