Valentine’s Day Void

While some kids are nursing sore stomachs from gorging on all of the Valentine’s Day treats they scored yesterday, others are nursing broken hearts from being overlooked by their peers. Then, there are the kids who live in a Valentine’s Day-free world. They are the lucky ones. The tykes, who won’t have to spend countless hours in therapy, because they weren’t gifted with a homemade card and heart-shaped Sweet Tarts. You can find those kids across the pond in the United Kingdom. According to reports, administrators at one British elementary school decided to ban Valentine’s Day cards and candy because … Continue reading

Valentine’s Day Love: How Young is Too Young?

When my brother was in the sixth grade he socked away four months’ worth of allowance and added it to two months’ worth of salary he earned as a paperboy. Then, a week before Valentine’s Day, he and my mom went to a local jewelry store where my brother proceeded to fork over his life savings to purchase a gold chain with a matching jewel encrusted letter “M” charm, for a girl named Michelle. Whether or not you find the time-honored Valentine’s Day tradition to be a tiresome chore or a … Continue reading

Seeing Red on Valentine’s Day

My 6-year-old is counting down the days to her first grade class Valentine’s Day party. She’s dying to pass out the all-red treats she chose for all of her classmates and hand her teacher the all-red Love Day card she made with a very red Sharpie. It’s all about red during the countdown to February 14th. Thank goodness her Catholic School uniform is partially red or I’d really be in for it. You’d think the class party would be enough to satisfy my daughter’s obsession with red, but nooooooo, she wants to paint her entire day red, including her meals. … Continue reading
