Voting as a Family Affair

Yesterday was Election Day. In our little city and our state, that meant five ballot measures all having to do with raising taxes or funding in one way or another. It wasn’t terribly exciting and didn’t get voters all revved up and aggravated like some elections do. Still, as someone who has voted consistently since I first registered to vote after turning 18, I made my usual fuss about things and discussed the topics and ballot measures with my kids. We’ve even been known to read the voter pamphlets together as a family. They’ve grown used to it and they … Continue reading

Election Night Party

Why not throw together an election-day party for your family? If you have extended family or friends who can join you, so much the better. (Use judgment in selecting guests who can watch and discuss election results with each other in a civil manner.) Invitations: Have these ready when your crew comes home from work or school: Folded cardstock: on front, paste a clip art image of Uncle Sam and write“I WANT YOU…” On the inside write “… to join me for an election party.” Then lower on the page put the headline: “Proposition One” and following that this text: … Continue reading

Will You Be Taking Your Kids to the Polls on Election Day?

The stodgy suit wearing, watch checking, business exec who plans to vote on his lunch break might prefer you leave your squirmy little ones at home on November 4th, but countless voter advocacy groups are hoping parents across the nation will bring their children with them to the polls on Election Day. Several groups are going out of their way to make it easy for parents with children to get out and vote by providing free transportation to polling places and kid-friendly distractions inside. Because of the massive attention given to this year’s election, parents are being warned that parking … Continue reading

How Is It Politicians Have So Much Time to Cheat?

I was very disappointed to hear yesterday that John Edwards admitted to having an affair on his wife, Elizabeth. Worse, he did it when she was in the midst of battling cancer. It was just a few months ago when another such scandal forced the then governor of New York, Eliot Spitzer, out of office. Edwards isn’t going to face anything like that, but I think he can pretty much forget Obama naming him as his choice for vice-presidential running mate. I happen to like John Edwards, so I’m really disappointed to hear he’s joined the ranks of cheating politician … Continue reading

Our Economy

Are we in a recession? That is the question of the day in the political circles. The problem with today’s political arena is the economy becomes a tool for the games politicians play. I always watch election year with a bit of cynicism. The games our elected officials play with our economy in order to win the election or prove their point, go beyond just silly. At times, they can have serious impact to our country’s future and our own pocketbooks. One of the most significant financial problems with our country is its shortsightedness. With a new presidential election every … Continue reading

Politics and Marriage

Let the official presidential election year begin! Tonight’s the Iowa caucuses. After that the focus moves on to New Hampshire where in five days there’ll be another vote on the candidates. From then on we’re in for one heck of a ride. Because no matter what happens along the way or who wins the final election, this voting year is already going down in the record books. How can it not with the first black man running for President as well as a woman? Do You Know Your Spouse’s Political Temperament? Is this your first voting year together as a … Continue reading
