Don’t Judge My Choices Until You Live My Life

Is there anyone who hasn’t heard about the horrific shooting in Colorado? Friday at work it was all anyone could talk about and as fellow blogger pointed out in her blog, Watch Where You Point That Finger, everyone had an opinion about people taking their children to the movies in the first place. Apparently those people have never been single parents. Or maybe they’ve never been any type of parent but I know, as a single parent, sometimes, midnight showings are your best friend. If your kids are young, you hope they will sleep through the movie. As a single … Continue reading

Watch Where You Point That Finger

Well, that didn’t take long. Then again, it rarely does. It’s been less than 72 hours since the mass shooting at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, and already cyberspace is ripe with pointed fingers, harsh accusations and shameless sanctimony. Sadly, though, that big, ugly finger of blame, which was initially aimed at the shooter, quickly turned to the parents of the victims, specifically the moms and dads who allowed their young children to attend the midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises. Thanks to pure thoughtlessness, Twitter, Facebook and thousands of other sites– where commenters and posters are able … Continue reading

Weigth Watchers Apple Pie Recipe

One slice of this apple pie will not only satisfy your apple pie craving but at 4 Weight Watchers points it will not ruin your diet. September is the month we all are thinking apple which leads to plenty of apple pies. I make several a year for my family. I will admit I only like apples in the raw. I never cared much for cooked apples and cannot see why one would harm a precious little apple with all that sugar and carbohydrates. Of course, ask me about chocolate chip cookies or cheesecake and I may have memory loss … Continue reading

Disciplining Yourself Isn’t Easy

It is eerily quiet. I am at my desk and the only sound is the clicking of my fingers going across my keyboard. My children returned to school yesterday. It is now my second day working full-time from home during the school year. I wasn’t sure what to expect. I have been looking forward to this day, imagining the sounds of nothingness and not having constant interruptions. Yet the quiet has made me feel a bit sad…not an emotion I expected to feel. The past two weeks especially have been difficult. I was trying to juggle my work, get in … Continue reading

Knitting With Your Preschooler

For more than a month now, I’ve been going to a knitting group on Wednesday afternoons. Our group just finished this week, and I suspect I’m going to go through withdrawal. I’ve scheduled a few knitting sessions with a friend and her daughter so that I can bridge the gap. It might be tough, but we can do it. In case you think that I’m a knitting expert, I am pleased to say that in the past few weeks I have finally mastered the art of purling. Hooray for me! My daughter has been knitting too, kind of. We were … Continue reading

Do YOU Cut Your Preschooler’s Hair?

Yesterday I took my preschooler to get her hair cut. (Ugh!) Unfortunately, when we arrived at the salon the female stylist who usually trims my daughter’s locks was sick and we were shuffled off to another “hair technician.” (Double UGH!) My daughter has always loathed getting her hair cut. She freaks out when the tiniest bit of hair comes into contact with her eyes, nose or mouth. Needless to say, the person who has the unenviable task of trimming her mane is often met with a squiggly, wiggly, contorting tot, who starts asking, “Are we done yet?” before the first … Continue reading

A Stitch in Your Side

The body is an amazing mechanism… when everything’s working correctly. But when one little bit gets out of step, you can end up in some serious discomfort. Case in point: a stitch in your side. What causes a stitch? This sharp pain is usually caused by a muscle spasm in your diaphragm — the muscle between your chest and your abdomen. When blood flow to the diaphragm is interrupted, the muscle can cramp. So, for example, when you’re running, the movement of your legs can cause pressure in the belly. The deep breathing you’re doing has the lungs expanding more … Continue reading

How Are You Spending the Day After Thanksgiving?

I hope that you enjoyed a good Thanksgiving holiday. How are you spending this day after? For us, we started the day by sleeping in for a bit. We had a lot of sleep to make up, thanks to an emergency room visit and a long Thanksgiving day that ended with a two-hour drive back home. We enjoyed the day, but we all feel tired and a bit achy. Our daughter woke up in her fancy dress, too tired to change when my husband carried her to bed half-asleep in the car. Despite the hot fudge stain on it from … Continue reading

Are you Raising a Mini Fashionista?

Thankfully (for my sanity as well as my wallet), my preschool daughter is much more interested in flinging her body off furniture than she is in fashion. She would rather craft than discuss clothing trends and she could care less about the latest and greatest hair accessories. In fact, save for her sparkly tutu and matching pink heels that she dons when watching “Dancing with the Stars” she really has no desire to dress up at all. My current situation (as fleeting as it might be) makes it hard for me to relate to parents who (whether they realize it … Continue reading

Caring for Your Cast

If you’ve broken a bone, you may end up needing to spend some quality time wearing a cast. Here are some tips to help care for your cast! Keep the cast dry. It’s going to be a pain, but you’ve got to do your best. Wrap the cast in plastic if you want to bathe — a bath may be easier than a shower, depending on where the cast is. When I had nine stitches in my palm and had to keep them dry, I had a heck of a time washing up. A bath was easier because I could … Continue reading
