We're Getting Closer on the College Forms

I've written a bit about how my eldest daughter is only a few months away from high school graduation and how we have been getting geared up for college as well. I believe I've mentioned that she is a bit of a procrastinator and not one of those kids who is absolutely certain-written-in-stone about what she would like to do after high school. Meanwhile, I have been trying to balance out my involvement and let her take the lead. So, it is an interesting dance we have been doing! As deadlines are starting to loom, however, she is picking up speed and we are starting to check some things off of our "To Do" list.
This weekend, we have managed to complete the FAFSA (the Free Application for Federal Student Aid), as well as our state scholarship commission application. Both took a fair amount of time and supporting documents, and the latter involved my daughter sitting down to answer those dreaded "essay questions." We are also nearly finished with four of the college applications that will be due in the next few weeks. We both know that there are plenty of high school seniors who have been done with all of this for months, but again, this is her thing--I am letting it get done on her schedule and she is definitely someone who waits until the eleventh hour!
Meanwhile, I am learning those never-ending lessons of parenting: patience, letting go, how to provide guidance in a subtle way without taking over, when to nudge a little and when to ease up, and, most of all, how to be supportive and encouraging while providing unconditional love. As I keep telling her, whatever she does in regards to college or life needs to be HER thing and I am going to love and support her regardless--whether she gets the papers in on time or not!
