Hector “Macho” Camacho Dies

It’s not normally a sport girls like to watch a lot, but over the years, I’ve enjoying watching boxing from time to time and kept up with the bigger names in the sport. That’s why last Tuesday, when I learned Hector “Macho” Camacho was shot in the head in Puerto Rico, I was saddened. I remember watching Camacho, a Puerto Rican native, in the ring with his long, flashy trunks. His ring entrances were equally as flashy. Once, he came in dresses as a Roman warrior, including armor, once, he had a black mask on with a trunk that looked … Continue reading

Sherman Hemsley Dies

Forgive the pun, but today, actor Sherman Hemsley moved on up, to a deluxe apartment in the sky. Now, if you don’t get the pun in that sentence, then you probably never watched “The Jeffersons.” Hemsley played the lead, George Jefferson, on that show, one of the most beloved comedies of the late ‘70s/early ‘80s. He died at age 74 of what is being reported as natural causes. (This work is in the public domain in that it was published in the United States between 1923 and 1977 and without a copyright notice.) Before he had his own show, Hemsley … Continue reading

Homeopathic Remedies for Menopause

I work at a health science center and a few weeks, they had a nurse conducting a seminar on menopause. I am not in full blown menopause, but experiencing the “joys” of perimenopause. But, I figured I would go to check out the seminar anyhow. What I did was pretty much waste my lunch hour. It might have helped some people there, but nurse mainly talked about hormone replacement therapy. Oh no wait, it’s called hormone therapy now. The study that was done years ago that showed that HRT could cause problems has been revisited by many and there were … Continue reading

Twas the night before Mother’s Day… are you headed to bed with visions of sugar plums dancing in your head? “Grandmother Gene” Linked to Higher Birth Weights

Scientists have discovered that a particular gene variation contributes to the birth weight of babies. The gene variant is one that is passed down from the mother or from the maternal grandmother. This is why it is being referred to as the “Grandmother Gene”. The size of an infant, when he or she is born, is noteworthy. Hospitals will write down the height, and the weight, of a baby in medical paperwork. News websites and television stations often have stories about babies who were born extremely small, or who were born at a much larger size than the average. New … Continue reading

A Few More Studies About the Causes of Autism

It seems to me that there is a constant stream of news articles regarding studies that have found the cause of autism. I’ve heard so many different ideas about the cause of autism that I am having trouble figuring out which one is correct. This week, there are two more studies that may, or may not, have found the cause of autism. Right now, it seems that the only thing that is known for certain is that immunizations do not cause autism. There have been a plethora of other studies that pin the cause of autism on a wide variety … Continue reading

Extra Space as the Birdies Leave the Nest

As I have been blogging about my son joining the Air Force, I have been expressing my mother heart. That part of me feeling pained about the idea of him leaving and just the uncertainty of enlisting in the military. However, there is another side of this that I almost feel guilty about. It’s the planning we have already been doing with the extra room we will have. As the little birdies begin to leave the nest, it opens up more space. And although I chastised my youngest for his first question being, “Can I get Daniel’s room?” I couldn’t … Continue reading
