When Does the Child-Proofing End?

I am contemplating getting a dog, a puppy actually. I am sure that my motivation is partly influenced by the fact that my kids are all in high school and while they still need me, they definitely need me in different ways now that they are getting older. As a somewhat methodical person when it comes to making major decisions (I am spontaneous enough on the small, day-to-day things, but I like to research and mull things over when it comes to big purchases and decisions—especially as I get older), I have started the “research” and have been reading a … Continue reading

Pet-Proofing Your Home

My daughter wants a dog. Not a stuffed one (she has about three dozen of those)—a real, live puppy that will lick her face when she enters the door. What’s a mother to do? I think I bought some time by ordering her a battery-operated toy puppy that claims to “lick” faces. We’ll see how it goes. For the record I have nothing against dogs, it’s just that our home and lifestyle are not exactly conducive to having a pet right now. Try explaining that to a strong-willed 2-year-old. It wasn’t easy… but for a split second I actually thought … Continue reading

Internet Child-Proofing

As I sit in front of my computer trying to make a few deadlines, I am interrupted by that all too familiar ding of email hitting my inbox. It’s not my close friend from Texas shooting the breeze nor is it my Mother reminding me to remind her when my son’s next soccer game is. This time it’s a report generated automatically and sent to both my husband and I from my children’s computer letting me know exactly what they are doing online. Snooping? Maybe. But I’m not really interested in reading their private emails or visiting the websites they … Continue reading

Toy Troubles

Toys are a real problem in my house. Once we have children we’ll have to be careful about what toys are left lying around. At the moment we can’t have many toys for either the cats or the dog, and Chihiro has no one but herself to blame. Chihiro has one goal with every toy she finds: to consume it. When we first got her she came with a stuffed pink octopus toy. That lasted just a few weeks before she began tearing off pieces to eat. I got her another stuffed toy and a rope toy to replace her … Continue reading

Tree-Sitting

In our front yard there sits a tree. This tree very clearly took root prior to my birth. This tree is beautiful and my family and I currently cherish it. After having lived in what was practically a desert for a number of years we are very excited to have such clear signs of vibrant life so close to home. Our front yard is a cherished part of our new home. Every single time we open the door or look out of the window we see this magnificent tree. Our son has taken it upon himself to appreciate the tree … Continue reading

Time for a Safety Inspection

The application is finally completed; your references are getting their reference letters, so now what? Now you will begin going through the entire checklist. You will need to have a safety & fire inspection. If you call your local fire department they will usually come to your home and do the Fire Inspection at no cost to you. When they come out they will need to see and test working smoke detectors in each bedroom, the hall between bedrooms, the kitchen and living room. If your home has burglar bars you will not pass the inspection. You need to have … Continue reading

The Crawling Monster

My son has finally figured out crawling. He’s figured it out in a big way and my wife and I are starting to see what a massive change that actually is for our small family. Our son has the ability not only to move but to move quickly and decisively. I’m sure that all of the veteran parents are kindly laughing at me but it truly is quite a shock. Somehow I had thought that we’d seen the worst with his inaccurate wiggling from place to place. Boy was I wrong. Now our son doesn’t just not stay were we … Continue reading

Types of Cloth Diapers: The All In One Diaper

I’m an all-in-one kind of gal. When it comes to diapers, I’m all about no fuss, no muss, and dead simple. The dead simple part is particularly attractive, because when I am sleep-deprived, nothing, not even a diaper, seems to compute. What is an all in one diaper? These cloth diapers are as simple as a disposable. They come with an outer part, which may have a nylon or polyester shell. The shell is for waterproofing so that the diaper does not leak when you’re out on a trip or when you just can’t change the diaper for a while. … Continue reading
