Parents of Kids With Autism Want Less Judgement

No one wants to get “that look” from the other parents in the room. It is the look that implies that you are a failure as a parent because your child is misbehaving. Parents of kids who have autism want less judgement, and more understanding. What others see as “acting up” could be nothing more than a coping mechanism, and there isn’t anything wrong with that. The other day, I opened up a bottle of tea, and found writing on the inside of the lid. It was one of those “6-Word Memoirs”. This one said: “I have Aspergers. What’s your … Continue reading

Set Parenting Goals for Each of Your Children

I don’t really get into New Year’s Resolutions but I do like to set goals for the New Year. I typically spend some time evaluating all the important areas of my life and set one or two goals. Obviously one of the most important areas of my life is my children. I love being a mom. It has its challenges, especially with the ages they are right now but I wouldn’t trade this for anything. Yet I know that things can always be better so as I look to 2011 I have some things in mind. This year one of … Continue reading

When Moms Judge Each Other

There is nothing that drives me crazier than moms who judge other moms. I wish I could say that I never suffer from that but that would be a lie. However I do strive really hard not to, just for the simple fact that I hate how it feels to be judged. One of the things I try to remind myself, both when I find it a struggle not to judge and when others judge me, is that I was given my particular children for a reason. They were born into my family for a purpose. I know best how … Continue reading

Are You a Good Mother?

Here is how to tell if you are a good mother or a bad mother. As moms, we are constantly worried whether or not that we are good mothers. Our child falls at the playground: bad mother. We hold our baby through three hours of colicky crying without once getting upset: good mother. We let our child eat candy before dinner: bad mother. You get the picture. We are quick to judge other mothers, too. That one yells too much, this one doesn’t discipline her child, that other one over there lets her child watch television all day. To the … Continue reading

Summer Storm Survival

This post does not provide tips on how to protect you and your children from lightning strikes, floods or other physical dangers associated with summer storms. Rather, this blog is designed specifically to help moms and dads preserve their sanity when Mother Nature unleashes torrential downpours that force kids to spend the entire day indoors. Some simple yet entertaining indoor boredom busters include: Sing-Off: Grab some ear plugs for yourself, and then let the kids go wild exercising their vocal cords with their own version of “American Idol,” or “The Voice.” Set-up a karaoke machine and a little stage area … Continue reading

Erin Moran Sees Unhappy Days?

About a year ago, I blogged that many of the cast and crew from “Happy Days” was fighting for royalties from the show. Erin Moran (who played Joanie), Don Most (who played Ralph Malph), Marion Ross (who played Mrs. Cunningham), Anson Williams (who played Potsie), and the estate of the late Tom Bosley (who played Mr. Cunningham) feel they deserve payment from merchandise sales related to the show and the characters they played. The lawsuit was actually born when Erin Moran called CBS in 2002 to see how much money she was owed in merchandising royalties because their contracts stated … Continue reading

Attachment Parenting Controversy

Most of us have probably heard about or seen the controversial “Time” magazine cover, in which a mother is breastfeeding her 3 year old son. It has sparked a lot of debate about not only the image displayed on its cover but the idea behind “attachment parenting.” Some of the methods used in attachment parenting include breastfeeding into their toddler years, “wearing” your baby, sleeping with or close to your baby, and responding to your baby whenever they cry. Now I am not one to judge, as every parent has to do what they feel is best. Some doctors believe … Continue reading
