Is Your Child’s Idol a Loser?

She loved one of her songs, but thankfully, my daughter is not in love with pop sensation Miley Cyrus. I consider myself one of the lucky ones. The former “Hannah Montana” star has legions of young fans, though much to their parents’ chagrin. According to a new poll, 68% of parents say they can’t stand the 19-year-old and wish their children would idolize someone else. Moms and dads claim their displeasure with Cyrus stems from her public transformation from squeaky-clean Disney star to risqué, half-naked punk performer. Joining Cyrus on the list of most unpopular teen role models is another disgraced … Continue reading

Your Presence is the Best Present

Forget about the fancy triple chocolate cookie pops, the pricey heart covered Build-a-Bear, and the massive red and white mylar balloon bouquet you were planning to gift your child with this Valentine’s Day.  Save your money and present your son or daughter with your presence on February 14th and in the days, weeks and months that follow. While candy, stuffed animals and shiny inflatables typically rank high on a child’s Valentine’s Day gift wish list, most kids would likely trade in the treats for one-on-one time with mom and dad. Life is hard enough for youngsters, so knowing that they … Continue reading

What Not to Do in Front of Your Kids When It Comes to Money

Children learn what they see. It is a true statement for any kind of behavior including money management. Children’s attitudes toward money and whether or not they will be able to make it work for them as adults has much to do with their parents. If you are married, think about any differences that there might be between you and your spouse, regarding any issues having to do with money. Is one of you more a saver than a spender? Do you approach investing or debt the same way? Chances are that you may each have different ideas about handling … Continue reading

Who is Your Model Mom?

My model mom has eight legs, five biological children, three adoptive ones, two dewy eyes and a gigantic heart of gold. In honor of Mother’s Day, I’m turning the spotlight on motivational moms who have made an impact on my parenting techniques. While there are many exceptional women out there raising kids in ways that warm the heart and stir the soul, this post highlights a unique mother I’ve admired since my daughter was a toddler. She embodies the fortitude of Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta, the diplomacy of a Nobel Peace Prize winner, and the flexibility of a Cirque … Continue reading

Tan Mom vs. Snooki

Only in America… Forget the showdown featuring working versus stay-at-home moms; that’s so 2008. The latest battle on the mommy war front pits Tan Mom in one corner and reality TV mom-to-be Snooki in the other. It’s a fake bake smackdown… and it’s giving motherhood a bad name. And by motherhood I mean humanity. For those of you too busy raising your own kids to keep track of the war of words brewing between these two immature anti-role models, allow me to get you up to speed: Patricia “Tan Mom” Krentcil is the 44-year-old New Jersey mom, who recently made … Continue reading

Mom Poses Her Nude Daughter on the Internet

My husband and I have frequent talks about how we can protect our kids from the dangers of technology, including the Internet. We want to make sure that they don’t become victims of any pedophiles or other predators that are out there, or come across images or text that would harm them. While we do put some pictures of them on Facebook, we use the full security controls to ensure that only the friends and family that we want to have access to the photos of our kids can see them. Of course, these are wholesome images of them doing … Continue reading

How Was Your Black Friday?

Yesterday, my husband and I went out shopping for Black Friday. We did not leave the house until almost noon, but we were okay with that. My husband actually went out twice; the first outing was a spur of the moment trip with his brother on Thursday night around ten. His brother had never done the Black Friday thing before, and they had found a couple of items that they were interested in while they were checking out the ads after Thanksgiving dinner. I was still awake, doing my writing work when my husband returned home with just a couple … Continue reading

Giving Your Kid a Boost

My daughter is in the second grade and still rides in a five-point harness child safety seat. You’d think by now she would have graduated to a backless booster, but not all kids grow at the same rate. Similarly, not all car seats are made the same. My daughter’s Graco Nautilus 3-in-1 car seat is designed for kids up to 100 pounds. Currently, she doesn’t even weigh half that. While the seat converts to a backless booster for a child 40 to 100 pounds, my little peanut barely makes the mark, so for the foreseeable future she will remain strapped … Continue reading
