Lance Armstrong Comes Clean to Doping

The other night, I was in bed, looking for something to watch on television.  I know, I know, experts say you shouldn’t have a television in your bedroom, but I find it comforting to watch a little before I go to bed. I was channel surfing when I came across the Lance Armstrong interview on OWN.  I didn’t realize this was the first airing and I am not a huge cycling fan, but something compelled me to watch. It has already been leaked to the media that Armstrong would confess to using performance-enhancing drugs to Oprah, but I wanted to … Continue reading

Reluctant Readers … Boredom is Good

I have one son who is a really good reader, but doesn’t like to do it very much. The books he reads have to hit him just right at the exact moment he wants to read them, or he won’t do it. I’ve literally taken him to the library and told him we aren’t leaving until he finds a book he wants only to leave three hours later, empty-handed, and me about to pass out from low blood sugar. He’s that persnickety. And yet … I’ve found two things that get him reading. I’m not saying you should try this—I’m … Continue reading

Lloyd’s of London Not Paying for “This is It” Tour

Lloyd’s of London have sued AEG Live and Michael Jackson’s company because Lloyd’s of London wants to nullify a $17.5 million dollar policy that promoters took out. Underwriters feel that the promotors lied about the singer’s medical history when the policy was taken out. In 2009, Michael Jackson was preparing for his “This Is It” tour. This was going to be a series of 50 concerts that would be taking place at the O2 arena, in London, England. The tour had been described as his “London comeback” tour. Tickets for this tour sold out really quickly, and things looked like … Continue reading

October 2010 General Conference-What Have You Done With My Name?

I often don’t think about what will happen when I’m gone. I don’t think about the “legacy” I might be leaving. But, every once in a while, it flutters through my mind, and I think, “What will people say about me when I’m gone?” or “Did I do enough in this life to make an impact on someone, somewhere?” I look at those of my relatives that have already passed on, and I only have good thoughts. I do not think of the mistakes they made, or my bad experiences I may have had with them, but I think of … Continue reading

Ellen is Leaving Idol and Diddy Wants In

More American Idol changes and gossip this week and it wasn’t all good. First off, I was a bit unsure to whether I was going to like Ellen DeGeneres when it was announced she would be taking Paula Abdul’s place on Idol. The first couple of episodes were a bit awkward. I mean, after all, what does Ellen know about music other than how to dance to it? Then, about half way through the season, Ellen hit her stride. What she said wasn’t really relevant to helping the contestants, but she was funny and a bit like Paula, she seemed … Continue reading

“American Idol” Judges—-Staying or Going

Simon Cowell is flapping his lips again. This time the sardonic “American Idol” judge is yapping about his last days on the show that made him a household name. According to reports, Cowell has vowed to quit as judge on “American Idol” if the hit show slips from the top spot in the TV ratings. The singing show regularly draws about 22 million viewers per episode in the United States, and has been No.1 in the Nielsen ratings for the last few years. However, the acerbic Brit is adamant that if the program ever dips in the ratings, he will … Continue reading

Adoption Books with Great Art: Megan’s Birthday Tree

Another entry in our Adoption Books with Great Art series is remarkable not only because of its luminous paintings, but because it is one of the rare books that describe an open adoption so naturally. In Megan’s Birthday Tree, the narrator tells us that she sometimes wonders about her adoption, but “I don’t have to go far to find the answers to my questions. Mom and Dad tell me what I want to know. And since I have an open adoption, I stay in touch with my birth mother, Kendra, too. Although I don’t see her often, we mail each … Continue reading

Donald Trump Saves Ed McMahon from the Streets

Who knew Donald Trump was a softie? The man whose acerbic comments made him Rosie O’Donnell’s No. 1 enemy is Ed McMahon’s new best friend. Or at least his landlord. The real estate mogul announced that he just shelled out more than $3 million to save Johnny Carson’s sidekick’s Beverly Hills mansion from foreclosure. According to reports, Trump bought the home for an undisclosed amount and plans to lease it to McMahon so he and his wife don’t have to find somewhere else to live. Eighty-five-year-old McMahon went public a few months ago with his tales of financial woe. The … Continue reading

My Dad Wants to Attend My Mom’s Funeral

This afternoon my sister is going to hold a memorial service for my mom at the church she used to attend. My dad has informed me he plans on going. Which is fine. I told him he could be my personal representative because I won’t be there. (Yes, sadly, the rifts that started between my sister and I when my mom first got sick have only gotten bigger. Now I’m not on speaking terms with her.) I was only joking about the personal representative thing, but my dad did sort of feel he needed an excuse. For a variety of … Continue reading
