Letting Children Grow Up Too Fast

“Can I have a cell phone for my birthday?” “How old do I have to be before I can date?” “Can I hang out at the park with my friend?” “Can I get a Facebook page?” These are all questions that a child of mine has asked in the past week. The scary thing is he will be turning 11 years old this upcoming weekend. He is barely a tween. I am sure it is hard being the youngest. To have to sit back and watch your older brother and sister get more privileges can’t be easy. I am trying … Continue reading

Advantages to Having Your Teen’s Friends Over

When I was younger, especially as a teen, my parents rarely allowed friends to come over. I think it mostly had to do with the fact that they didn’t want to be bothered or deal with the noise. In all honesty I can relate. My kids are on spring break this week and of course they have all these plans for their friends to come over. Since I work from home, it seems almost logical that all the friends would come here. A part of me wants to say no. I still have work to do and frankly, I don’t … Continue reading

Defending Your Teens Bad Behavior

Four teens pull up to a McDonald’s Drive through and attemp to Rap their order. Apparently, they had spent too much time on YouTube watching different McDonald’s rap videos. They apparently didn’t watch the whole video to see that no one actually understood what the rappers wanted. The people at a Utah McDonald’s were not amused and asked the “musicians” to speak clearly. When the manager asked them to speak their order or leave they became beligerent used foul language and eventually sped off. The police were called, the young men were tracked down, and citations, similar to speeding tickets … Continue reading

Getting Teens to Dress Conservatively for School

I realize that this subject is interpretable and perhaps a bit controversial, but the way teens dress for school really does affect their education. Take for instance, the Cobb County GA Teen who liked to wear women’s clothes to school and the disruption that three days in skinny jeans caused. While most teens don’t go nearly this far to express their personal style, they do love to push boundaries, and they often push them too far. Just five years ago, low rise jeans for girls were pushed to the extreme. It was common for girls to wear these jeans to … Continue reading

Parents Please Teach Your Teens to be Leaders

Years ago, a family member lost his college scholarship because he was caught with friends who were doing something illegal. This person had alot of “the wrong place, the wrong time incedents”. There is a young man in my county who is being prosecuted for an attack on a young woman and her baby. He dropped off two “friends” and left them at the residence. I just heard about two teenage boys being charged for some very serios crimes because friends asked them to help get something back from a girlfriend. The simple breaking and entering escalated into something ugly. … Continue reading

Why I Keep My Teens on a Short Leash

After reading No Free-Range Kids for Me? by Mary Ann Romans, I have to agree wholeheartedly. The idea of having free range kids is well, just a little nutty from me and coming from one of those crazy homeschoolers, that’s saying alot. In our entire neighborhood, we have one “free range” child, and I have been tempted to call child protection several times. I have seen him wandering both in and out of the subdivision in all types of weather, and there have been times that he came to my house for shelter as his mother locked him out of … Continue reading
