Not Buying It

After nearly two decades working in television news, I’ve learned to be a bit more judicious when perusing headlines. In other words, I don’t believe half of what I see published these days, especially viral items that sweep the globe and become water cooler fodder, despite there being very little fact checking prior to their circulation. But, hey, sensationalism sells, so why mess up the money-making process by letting a little thing like the truth get in the way? It’s a question single moms around the world are left to ponder yet again thanks to an anonymous server who claims … Continue reading

How Not to Travel with Kids This Christmas

I’ve had my share of travel nightmares flying back and forth from Chicago to Hawaii with my daughter. While our mishaps make for funny blogs, I would prefer experiencing incident-free trips. Then again, even the shortest vacations with children can lead to high drama, which is why most parents spend countless hours researching and planning the best ways to avoid meltdowns while on the road or in the air. Believe me; you can not over-prepare when it comes traveling with kids. It’s a lesson parents from North Carolina learned the hard way this week. When Jason and Kathy Fickes of … Continue reading

Mom Murders Teens for Being “Mouthy”

Tragic and unbelievable. Those are the words that immediately came to my mind upon hearing about the Florida mom who admitted to murdering her 16-year-old daughter and 13-year-old son. Have you heard about this case? It’s all over the cable news networks. According to CNN, on the evening of January 27th, Julie Powers Schenecker allegedly shot and killed her two children for “talking back.” Police say the 50-year-old wife of a U.S. Army colonel admitted to them that she shot her son twice in the head with a .38 caliber pistol while she drove him to soccer practice in suburban … Continue reading

Are You a Tiger Mom?

Are you a tiger mom? In case you haven’t heard, a controversial book from 2011 still has parents stirring. The author is Amy Chua and she has written a parenting book called “Tiger Mother.” In a nutshell she proclaims Chinese parents to do a better job than the rest of us. Why? They are much stricter and stringent. Her children have turned out well and she believes it is the result of her teaching and training. Honestly, my idea of strict is taking away the television for the rest of the day but her ideas are clearly different. To … Continue reading

Why Do I Even Bother?

Why do I even bother asking my kid to find anything? Why? Nothing ever good comes from it. Never mind that the items I’m asking my 5-year-old to locate belong to her. Her mittens, her scarf, her boots, her socks, her backpack, her library book… Why? Why do I waste precious time, energy and oxygen lecturing her about responsibility and being conscientious about her belongings? Why do I rant about creating a system whereby she places her winter gear in the same exact spot each day, so she can find them in that exact spot each day? Why do I … Continue reading

Do You Have Mommy Cards?

Forget about using discarded gum wrappers, the clean edge of a ketchup stained McDonald’s napkin or the back of a store receipt to exchange phone numbers with the new mom you just met at the park. If you are serious about getting your kids together for a future playdate, then aim to impress with official “Mommy cards.” Have you seen these things? At the risk of offending the litany of feminist groups that vehemently oppose women labelling themselves as mere caregivers, I must admit my first reaction to seeing the modern-day “Mom cards” was: “Oh Cuuuuuute!” What can I say? … Continue reading

Are You A Member of the Mad Moms Club?

Don’t hate me because I’m angry. If you have young children at home, then you probably can relate to my rage. At least that’s what a new survey found. Apparently, there are many moms just like me whose tempers flare when they are stressed out about unruly kids, financial issues, work-related problems and time constraints. This doesn’t mean that we are whipping dishes at the wall, screaming like lunatics or beating our kids because we are overworked and under paid. I don’t spank or scream at my 5-year-old daughter (I’m all about the loud sighs and lectures), but I can … Continue reading

Why Pregnancy Is Intimidating

You’d expect that with the slow waddle, loss of balance and the nurturer role kicked into high gear, there would be nothing scary about a pregnant woman, but to some, there is nothing more frightening. I remember walking through the mall in my last week of pregnancy (trying to go into labor) and catching people staring or quickly averting their eyes with a concerned look on their face. It seemed that everywhere I went, I made people nervous. I’m sure they were thinking, “she looks like she is going to go into labor at any moment!” I’m going to blame … Continue reading

I Am THAT Mom

I did it. I succumbed to the fear… nay, the reality, that the dinosaur costume my 5-year had to HAD. TO. have for Halloween might not be hanging in Toys R Us later this month. Yes, I bought the overpriced green fleece ensemble complete with plush claws… last month… shortly BEFORE Labor Day. OH YES I DID! I am that mom. The one other moms can blame for purchasing the one and only size 5 dinosaur costume Toys R Us decided to carry in our local store. I swear there was only one left when we got there. Yes, I … Continue reading

Thanksgiving Love Stories: Be Grateful You’re Not Married to Spencer Pratt

If you’re not a fan of The Hills, you may not have any idea who Spencer Pratt or his girlfriend Heidi Montag are. Er…except it’s not right to say Heidi’s his girlfriend anymore. After breaking up during last season, they got back together this season. Worse (I say that because I can’t stand Spencer and am in the camp that thinks Heidi’s making a big mistake staying with him), news broke last night that the pair eloped to Mexico just a few days ago and are now married. None of Heidi’s family was there. Nor were any of her friends. … Continue reading
