Parents Celebrate Ouch-Free Bandage

They can send a man to the moon, but they can’t design a bandage that doesn’t cause pain when it’s removed? Parents the world over know the torment that’s triggered when their child’s bloody bandage needs to be replaced. When my daughter was a toddler, she would scream like a peacock on fire when I would come within 10 yards of her bandaged knee. Now, the wails don’t start until I’m four yards away. Baby steps. At 8 years old, the kid is still deathly afraid of any discomfort she may have to endure during the bandage-changing process. The crying, … Continue reading

Fall Fire Danger

Fall is officially here, and with the debut of sweaters, colorful leaves and chilly temperatures comes an increase in fires–campfires. The season’s cooler weather sparks many families to light-up and gather around open flames. Whether you are hosting a marshmallow roast in your backyard fire pit or attending a fall fling at a beach bonfire, there are certain precautions you should take, especially if young children are part of the festivities. For starters, be aware that kids are attracted to flames. The bright dancing lights are hard to resist, especially for youngsters who don’t comprehend the injuries they can sustain … Continue reading

Killer Heat

Summer is finally here. The season of sun, sand and surf officially arrived just after 6 p.m. Central time, making June 20th the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. Many families celebrated the summer solstice with picnics, bonfires, and trips to the beach. Goodness knows they had ideal weather for their outdoor adventures. Currently, much of the country is baking under a mini heat wave. Today’s high in our neck of the woods reached a sizzling 94 degrees. Throughout the Midwest and along the East Coast, Mother Nature showed little mercy, frying those who ventured outdoors in … Continue reading

The Sweet Smell of Success

Scentless flowers and smelly jeans; what is the world coming to? Today, I rushed into a local flower shop to purchase a bouquet of roses as a thank you for a sweet woman who went above and beyond to help my daughter with a school project. I was in a hurry, so I grabbed the first dozen roses I saw in the display case. When I got to the check-out counter, the florist was busy creating massive bouquets featuring three to five dozen of the most gorgeous roses in a variety of colors, including pale pink, lavender and a stunning … Continue reading

Parents Are Wasters

According to the National Retail Federation, parents are a bunch of wasters. The group maintains that the average American family wastes nearly 15% of its purchases, from food to household supplies, gifts to apparel. Guilty as charged. I just trashed a half-empty container of hummus because it expired before my family could finish it. I despise wasting food, and would have downed the remaining chickpea spread myself had it not smelled like sweaty feet. I’ve eaten expired food items in the past, but didn’t want to chance it with the hummus, since the container was compromised. Apparently, it had slid … Continue reading

How Do You Feel About Hand-Me-Downs?

“Mommy, what is fungus?” Not exactly the type of question you want to hear from your second grader at the end of the first day of the new school year. Actually, it’s not the type of question I ever want to hear from my kid unless she is reading a Science book. Yet, it was exactly the question my daughter lobbed my way as we drove home last week. “It’s a kind of spore… like mold that grows on… well… it feeds on materials like…” I stopped myself. “It’s really gross, icky stuff that you don’t want to touch.” “Why … Continue reading

Bug Off

I went to our local strawberry farm and all I got was this nasty bee sting. Not exactly a winning t-shirt design, but 100 percent true, nonetheless. A couple of weeks ago our entire clan headed out on our annual trek to the u-pick strawberry patch to pluck my daughter’s very favorite fruit. After two hours in the blistering heat, we came away with about 10 pounds of the sweet and succulent summertime treat. In addition, I scored a bee sting that turned my shoulder as red as the ripest strawberry. While I am not allergic to bee stings, for … Continue reading

In the Blink of an Eye

A couple of weeks ago a 13-year-old rural Pennsylvania boy went outside to help his dad with some farm work and died in the blink of an eye. Not exactly the type of story you want to hear about in the middle of summer when your own kids are running amuck in the great outdoors. According to news reports, the boy was killed by lightning while he was helping his dad bale hay. Authorities say the teen was walking near a baler in the family’s open farm field when his dad heard a loud clap. When the father turned around … Continue reading

Hand-Me-Downs Don’t Hurt Kids

Not all rich people are spontaneous spenders who imprudently bleed through money like there’s no tomorrow. In fact, some of the most affluent individuals in the world rose to the upper echelon because they’re smart enough to know that it pays to be frugal from time to time. Take for example, one of the most well-off moms in the world, First Lady Michelle Obama. The fashionable mother of two equally well-dressed daughters is being raked over the coals by critics who claim that she is forcing her kids to wear hand-me-downs. “First Daughter Hand-Me-Downs?” screamed one newspaper headline after 9-year-old … Continue reading

Obliged to Buy

It’s that time of year again. Time to dig deep for Samoas, Thin Mints and Daisy Go Rounds. Girl Scout troops around the country just kicked off their cookie-selling season, and if you are a parent of a badge-obsessed scout, then you are likely doing your part to ring up sales by toting order forms into your office and forcing cookies upon co-workers. It’s the American way, right? You buy something from my kid and I return the favor, be it cookies, candy, wrapping paper or handmade fundraising ornaments. My daughter toyed with joining Daisy Scouts this year, but opted … Continue reading
