Introducing the Tooth Fairy

My toddler is only three. She’s been going to the dentist since her first birthday. I don’t want to think about her losing teeth. She’s so little. I didn’t start losing teeth until I was seven. Children typically start losing teeth around age six or seven. Jessie has a ways to go, which is a relief. Jessie’s school is holding an assembly today for the Pre-K through second grade children. The tooth fairy is going to make an appearance. I don’t know what the presentation is going to be; I wish I could be there for it. I hope Jessie … Continue reading

Sesame Street Lends a Hand to Cash-Strapped Parents

My preschooler loves watching Sesame Street, but honestly, the summer reruns are killing me. Seriously, if I have to hear Telly Monster lament about his missing triangle one more time I may reconsider Dish Network’s recent offer to hook me up with cheap satellite TV. Fortunately, I may not have to dig deep to preserve my sanity. Yesterday, the folks who produce Sesame Street announced that new episodes of the Emmy Award-winning children’s show will begin airing next month. What’s more, the new season includes a special show dedicated to the economy. If you haven’t already discussed the current financial … Continue reading

Has Becoming a Parent Made You a Better Person?

Most parents know all too well that kids learn by example, which is why the majority of us try to model good behavior. Now that you are a parent do you always remember to return your shopping cart to its designated area? Do you always remember to say “please” and “thank you” even after the guy at McDonald’s erased your order… twice, then made you wait 15 minutes for ONE Happy Meal? Do you always practice proper store etiquette and take time to return the box of animal crackers your toddler swiped from the shelf even if it means backtracking … Continue reading

Bad Economy + Tooth Fairy = Unhappy Kids

How much money does the Tooth Fairy leave at your house? My brothers and I used to get 25 cents per tooth, but in the decades since our teeth fell out it appears the Tooth Fairy has adjusted her rates and is now paying out a pretty penny (in the form of 5 and 10 dollar bills) for baby teeth. Evidently, the days when the Tooth Fairy could get away with leaving a couple coins and a pack of Trident gum are long gone. Our neighbor’s 6-year-old son ran over to our home yesterday flashing a new toothless grin and … Continue reading

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson Reinvents Himself – Part II

In my last blog, I was talking about how former WWE superstar Dwayne Johnson is reinventing himself into a movie star. First, he took on a bunch of action roles, understandable given his former profession. Then he starred in Disney’s The Game Plan. This was the perfect meld of the old Dwayne and the new Dwayne. He played a narcissistic football star (he played college football for the University of Miami) who unexpectedly finds out he has a daughter. Maybe this role hit close to home for Dwayne because he has a daughter of his own, Simone Alexandra. Proving he … Continue reading

The Sock Fairy

You’ve heard of the Tooth Fairy, the Easter bunny, the Sandman, Santa Claus? Well, there’s a new mythical being on the block – the Sock Fairy. By night, she sneaks into bedrooms and places new socks in the drawers. By day, she sorts the laundry and throws the old socks away. If she’s really on the ball, she’ll get distinctive socks for each member of the family so everyone knows whose socks are whose. Mothers do a great many thankless jobs. I guess I’m lucky—I do get thanked for the thankless jobs. Sometimes my husband even brings me Ben and … Continue reading

Yes Son, I Am The Tooth Fairy

In a previous blog, I wrote about my efforts to keep my tooth fairy identity a secret. Tyler has been losing his baby teeth over the past few months and had asked me if I was, in fact, the tooth fairy. I told him that I wasn’t and he believed me but I knew it was just a matter of time before I would have to tell him the truth. That time came on Thursday. For over a week, he had a loose front tooth and on Wednesday, it finally popped out. When he went to bed Wednesday night he … Continue reading

Is Your Child Ready to Answer the Phone?

It’s a question I asked myself a few weeks ago when my 4-year-old begged to pick up the phone while I was in the shower. Here’s the answer I came up with: If your child still holds the phone upside down and can’t figure out why grandma sounds so far away OR He or she tries to shove a freshly colored picture of Elmo into the receiver so grandma can see how well he or she stayed within the lines, then your child’s phone skills need some work and you might want to hold off on using him or her … Continue reading
